MGS has been attempting to capture an image of the MRO spacecraft before MRO's radar sounding antennas are deployed. An attempt last week at 80 km range failed because of a 2 second timing error. Another attempt was made on 2006/257; but the MGS star tracker failed to return the spacecraft to its normal attitude. Maria Schellpfeffer (MGS Mission Planning and Sequencing Team) provided additional details: For those that aren't aware, MGS seems to have had a false STAREX convergence following the MRO image that was taken at ~1900 yesterday. Commands were radiated last night to try to cause STAREX to start over and reconverge again, but they do not seem to have gotten on board the spacecraft. We believe the HGA is autotracking but is off-pointed by ~1.8 degrees. We are attempting another uplink today of the same commands at a lower bit rate, which will hopefully fix the problem. But for now, the signal level is too low for getting telemetry data. I'll send out another email as I know more. Maria reported later that "MGS has been recovered to nominal operations as of approximately 11:00 PM PDT Friday night." As noted under Open Loop Data Collection below, signal levels in occultation recordings acquired by RSR returned to normal levels on 2006/259 (Saturday).
