Sami Asmar forwarded the following message, which originated with Peter Poon on 10 October. It describes the status of DSS 63 (apparently before 2 Oct) and its return to service after replacement of the elevation bearings. The four new bearings have been installed on DSS-63 (the two Steyr on the inboard sides, the two F.A.G. on the outboard sides). Metrology is being completed this weekend. The bearing covers will be reinstalled tomorrow, and the bearing housings then filled with synthetic oil. The load cells will not be installed during this downtime. The vendor was unable to deliver as scheduled, and it was determined that it would be best to take delivery of all four load cells and test them thoroughly at JPL prior to any installation on DSS-63. A plan will be developed for their installation and use during the DSS-63 downtime, scheduled Jun - Sep 2007, for the completion of the Hydrostatic Bearing Assembly (HBA) task. Based on the request from MDSCC (Pablo Perez), I am currently polling the rest of the Response Team, and Erik Antonsson and Curtis Tucker of the Special Review Board (SRB), both of whom were recently at MDSCC, regarding their opinion on the readiness of DSS-63 to begin rotating in elevation on 02 Oct 06. When I receive the polling results, I will request authorization to proceed from DDOSO to begin movement in elevation. Following DDOSO's authorization to proceed, MDSCC plans to hand the antenna over to the Antenna Controller Replacement (ACR) task on 02 Oct 06. This will signify the beginning of ACR in elevation, which will be followed by antenna testing and characterization. (ACR in azimuth was completed in Aug 06). We are definitely on schedule for an 02 Jan 07 return to service. The timely completion of the bearing change-outs and an analysis of the remaining ACR and antenna testing schedules represent positive signs pointing to an early return to service.
