Please correct me if I'm wrong. Tim told me that during Trish times, his understanding was that no attenuation changes were allowed once the data collection started. Sal Abbate is back from Goldstone, and I've asked him to look into the I/F switch and attenuators problems. Because of the weekend, it might take a couple of days to hear back from SPC-40. That's a good rule of thumb if the A/D converter is not saturating or the signal levels are not VERY low. We need a few minutes of "baseline" measurements prior to entry into occultation in order to determine the free space amplitude and frequency stability. It's bad enough when the spacecraft is misbehaving or a cloud enters the beam; random attenuator changes just make it that much worse. So I would advise against 1-2 dB changes in attenuator levels once recording has started. If you're saturating, you'll probably need at least 5, and the problem should be pretty obvious. But the "fine tuning" of the attenuator probably causes more trouble than it's worth. Make notes for the next pass if you want to change 1-2 dB; but don't interrupt the recording that just started. The "emergency" attenuator changes at SPC 40 fall into a different category. You don't know what to set initially and finding a good level after recording starts has to be a snap decision. If it's done early, we can simply delay the query and the people doing analysis never know there was uncertainty; the recording just looks a little shorter than usual. RSSG operators have actually been doing that VERY well recently; quick action has always given us 5 good minutes of data after the final attenuator change -- which sometimes meant the difference between very bad data and something that turned out to be nearly perfect. The 1 dB attenuator change on 8685i falls into that "gray" zone. It was done quickly (within 30 s of AOS) and it was in the right direction -- away from saturation. But it probably wasn't needed. The samples were CLOSE to saturation (another 1 dB signal level might have given us some clipping). Hope this helps. We don't normally do 1-2 dB changes unless they bring signal levels from very close to saturation to safe levels.
