A couple of measurements were monitored remotely, and again, there were no error messages whatsoever (we can view the same log file remotely as the one that we view at JPL). In the past, the error message: W! OUT OF CIRCULAR BUFFER RANGE - GRAB LATEST ANCIL B has been the main indication that sawtooth was occurring. We still depend on that error message for sawtooth to let us know that something's wrong and action is needed. There were none during the above measurements. Also, I've checked the DSN log for error messages, and none were obvious. Each entire recording was corrupted by the "sawtooth" problem. This happens when the samples (or perhaps the POCA, I suppose) lose synchronization with the clock. It may well be that this can happen in some way besides a circular buffer overrun, or that overruns can occur without being detected by your software. When we process the data, we adjust for receiver tuning and doppler shifts. After doing this, we extract the carrier frequency as a function of time. Dave uses these frequency estimates to retrieve atmospheric profiles. In the baseline before ingress (or after egress) the extracted frequency should be flat. If the open loop samples have lost synchronization with the clock, the extracted frequency looks like a sawtooth. It is unambiguous. I have placed two postscript plots of the extracted frequenies for occultations 8803i (no problem at DSS 65) and 8804i (sawtooth at DSS 15) in your home directory here on magellan. Please take a look at them, and pass them along to whoever might be interested. The file names are freq8803i.ps and freq8804i.ps. Thanks for following up on this...
