However, you'll not see a carrier in them either. DSS 15 had an antenna failure, so there was a real-time switch to DSS 15. We were not aware of this change. I monitored the first two measurements from home, and things seemed to be running OK, that is, predicts loading, scripting running, and SPAR initializing. A DR was written for the antenna failure (DR# G06785). I had a long talk with the Ops Chief today, and he definitely wants to help prevent this kind of data loss in the future. He is going to a meeting tomorrow and he'll bring this up. Currently, they don't have a procedure that says that Radio Science should be notified in case of a real-time or last minute change in coverage (most of the time, this would be done by the ACE. But since the MGS ACE is not on duty much, someone else would need to do it. The Ops Chief or maybe Data Control). I mentioned this to a couple of Ops Chiefs before, but unless there is a procedure that we all agree on, they (or Data Control or someone else?!) can't be held responsible for not contacting us. Meanwhile, I will talk to the NOPE about this. I've already left him a message. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From ppriest@airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov Tue Feb 27 18:10 PST 2001 Received: from thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.90.10]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id SAA11844; Tue, 27 Feb 2001 18:10:14 -0800 (PST) Received: by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov; id SAA03465; Tue, 27 Feb 2001 18:10:40 -0800 Received: from airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov(137.228.96.12) by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov via smap (V4.2) id xma003301; Tue, 27 Feb 01 18:10:17 -0800 Received: from mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.136.10]) by airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3+Sun/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA13234; Tue, 27 Feb 2001 18:10:16 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ppriest@localhost) by mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) id CAA11347; Wed, 28 Feb 2001 02:10:16 GMT Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 02:10:16 GMT From: Patricia Priest Message-Id: <200102280210.CAA11347@mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov> DSS: 45 Apparently-To: Apparently-To: Content-Type: text Content-Length: 850 Status: RO Orbit: 8831i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 058/15:50:00 End Record: 058/15:56:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 8832i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 058/17:47:00 End Record: 058/17:54:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 8833i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 058/19:45:00 End Record: 058/19:52:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 8834i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 058/21:43:00 End Record: 058/21:50:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 8835i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 058/23:41:00 End Record: 058/23:47:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 8836i SOE: mm117a.05.tsoe Begin Record: 059/01:38:00 End Record: 059/01:45:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From aseel@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov Tue Feb 27 19:13 PST 2001 Received: from godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.120]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id TAA16627 for ; Tue, 27 Feb 2001 19:13:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id TAA14239 for ; Tue, 27 Feb 2001 19:14:07 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200102280314.TAA14239@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov> Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 19:14:07 -0800 (PST) From: Aseel Anabtawi Reply-To: Aseel Anabtawi Subject: 2001/058 at DSS 34 To: rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-MD5: Q1TlsB54Mu1OCdeEkHKVDA== X-Mailer: dtmail 1.2.1 CDE Version 1.2.1 SunOS 5.6 sun4u sparc Content-Type: TEXT/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Length: 963 Status: R Hello, There was a switch from DSS 34 to DSS 45. The S-band transmitter at DSS 43 (which was supporting Ulysses) failed, and to provide the same level of support, DSS 34 was switched to support Ulysses, and DSS 45 came up to support MGS. This change happened before the track started, but again (and this was a part of my long talk with the Ops Chief) we were not informed. The first measurement (8831i) ran assuming DSS 34 was in the link, so even though the data is there, there's not signal. There was no DR written by the station because this was a communications problem and the station had nothing to do with it. There were problems with the DSP before the last measurement. The station tried to reboot the DSP, but they had difficulties with both DSPs. The last measurement was lost due to DSP problems (DR# A05163).
