Now, it turns out, they decided to change the angle of the arrays to get less sun (by 25 degrees). That took about a week to accomplish. As I write this, MGS is in a contingency mode, in case you have not heard. We will be losing occultation data due to the low SNR from the LGA, so expect a degradation in gravity data as well. The Project chose to be stay in this mode for the weekend after initial attempts with the sequence was not successful. The solar array issues will be revisited next week and they may be changed again... that may have been the cause of the contingency mode - we don't know. Sorry that this is not too convenient for data analysis but we can't really complain either as the Project has to do what they need to do. We were commenting yesterday at the PSG that the environment is different in the extended mission. The priorities are to keep the spacecraft working through 2004. At best, the Project will let us know in advance about their plans for the solar array, but we have to keep our eyes open and expect to do more labor-intensive modelling.
