charset="us-ascii" Content-Length: 1465 Status: RO Hi Len and Team, Tom Thorpe just informed the Experiment Representatives that the latest evaluation of the fuel on MGS has revealed good information. As you know, the "raison d'etre" for MGS past the prime mission is to support the 03 Rovers. There was talk about placing MGS in storage modes and relay modes of various flavors. The latest was a relay mode that points it 22 degress off nadir (called Relay22) and the fuel situation was so bad we could not even wait for the end of the first extended mission (April 02) but start this June. Now, we no longer need to do that. The Extended Mission will continue as is without changes or off nadir pointing. This will then change in April 02 when we enter the Extended Extended Mission. At that time, we configure for Relay16 (16 degrees off-nadir pointing) but without loss of HGA communication to Earth. So Radio Science would not even be impacted. We remain in that configuration until August 2004, projected new end of mission (EOM). EOM is really End of Fuel. So it could be even after August or before if somebody miscalculated. This takes into account all the fuel needed for maneuvers and science operations. So, the fuel pendulum has swung in the other direction for now. This information is strictly for the consumption of the MGS Radio Science Team; please do not circulate until the Project completes risk studies. Of course, this does not imply funding approval from NASA.
