First, the signal's attenuation range (I just know them as being something between B's and E's if we haven't screwed up), was at the upper C range when it jumped to the upper B range and back again in the blink of an eye. Why would this happen? Secondly, and more interestingly, the carrier signal usually is blocked when it's 'echo' off of Mars catches up to it in the FFT; this didn't happen this time--the carrier or a really big echo continued past this point. From my quick-look processing and a run through my software that processes surface echoes, this looks about like what I would expect considering that Earth-Mars distance is relatively small. The RMS values that you monitor have a random component; if the values jumped from upper C's to upper B's and back again in a second (a typical refresh time for displays), that may simply be the statistics in action. I wouldn't expect this to happen very often -- especially with a strong carrier signal dominating the values -- but once in a blue moon might be OK. I think what you are saying here is that usually the surface echo comes in from the high frequency side and merges with the carrier just as the occultation occurs. Then both disappear as the spacecraft appears to go behind Mars. In this case, they didn't go away as you expected. When there are strong surface echoes -- as there have been for several months -- there is sometimes a "residual" echo that persists AFTER the carrier goes away and actually appears to continue drifting on the LOW frequency side of the carrier location. There is a good one in this case, and it lasts 3-4 seconds after ingress and drifted to maybe 100 Hz below where the carrier had been. We're trying to figure out where this comes from and why. There are a couple theories. One is that this is part of the signal diffraction occurring near the limb of Mars near the occultation time. Rather than "blinking out" when the spacecraft goes behind the limb, the signal oscillates in amplitude and then takes a final dive. I can't get the signal to drift in frequency using this explanation, so I prefer to think of the drift as resulting from an "image" reflection off the surface BEHIND the limb. This takes a little imagination, but is consistent with certain solutions to electromagnetics in which "duality" conditions are invoked. In fact, the real explanation may be a combination of both of these theories -- we just haven't found the common vocabulary to see that we are describing the same thing. So, if I've described what you saw, you may have stumbled onto one of the research questions we're trying to understand. We don't know the answer any more than you do!
