An expired mapping ephemeris caused gradually worsening attitude
knowledge, whenever the spacecraft was in CSA Backup mode.  In
Primary Map mode, the MHSA provides the Mars pointing attitude
knowledge.  In CSA Backup mode, which was entered only during ROTO
sequences for 7-14 Aug, the primary means of determining Mars nadir
pointing attitude knowledge is the mapping ephemeris.  It was not
until DOY 225 (13 Aug) that problems with attitude knowledge were
apparent.  A separate ISA has been written for the large attitude
error seen at the end of the ROTO sequence, on DOY 225.  Attitude
knowledge had worsened the following day, at the end of a ROTO
sequence, to the point that gyro biases were not updating accurately,
STAREX had problems identifying stars, and eventually HGA comm was
lost.
