To: rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu Date: Mon, 5 Aug 2002 17:16:55 +0000 (UTC) Cc: flemoine@shavano.gsfc.nasa.gov (Frank Lemoine), dsmith@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov X-Mailer: ELM [$Revision: 1.17.214.2 $] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Length: 10677 Status: O Dick- I was wondering if you could clarify a mystery that has I've found. The SOE file (in this example for days 256-265) has information about spacecraft commands (?) "Unload spin axis momentum" Yes, we get no AMD file that reports an AMD on the dates and times listed below. For at least one arc (010913-010919), if one looks at the residuals, it is easy to see there is an anomaly in the arc starting at 010913 ~12:30 which is about the time of the spin axis unload command in the SOE file. Putting in a set of accels to account for the event, reduces the magnitude of the spurious residuals at the start of the arc, but does not totally solve the problem. So, I'm left wondering about the discrepancy between what comes out of the AMD files, and what is in the SOE files, and I wonder if we are missing information. The commands for spin axis unloads look like (in these files) like they occur every six hours or so. The AMD info from the desat files does not show that many desats or desats at the times indicated in the SOE file. (see below after the extracted SOE info) So what does this mean? Are the AMD files missing information, or should the information in the SOE file be ignored? The lack of correlation between the two files is disturbing and I do not know what to do. commands of this sort "Unload spin axis momentum" appear in the SOE files from day 088 to 319 of 2001. I'm looking at a series of about 40 arcs (5 days or so in length for the most part) from Sept 1, 2001 to March 31, 2002. About 1/4 have some problem in the residuals that means the arcs need more attention. The remainder have decent RMS of fit ranging from 0.15 mm/s to 0.25 mm/s - with on average a monotonic increase in time - presumably a solar plasma effect in the data. So, it is hard to say that *not* taking the SOE spin axis momentum unload information is hurting us. The problem arcs mentioned above - could be having problems for any number of reasons. Where would those be on magellan? I fetched the solar array ckernel(s) from /users/z00/SAK/ but where would the spacecraft quaternion information be? .../TCK/? (the reason is that the amalgamated mgs_sa_ext3.bc has a gap on Sept 14 2001) -Frank -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From flemoine@ishtar.gsfc.nasa.gov Thu Aug 29 08:23:42 2002 Subject: solar array quaternions- To: rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 15:23:02 +0000 (GMT) Cc: flemoine@ishtar.gsfc.nasa.gov MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: flemoine@ishtar.gsfc.nasa.gov Dick- I can't remember if I emailed you yesterday or not; The actual gap is from SEP 13 15:08 to SEP 13 22:53. I don't think anything can be done now as far as querying the project; I will just "manufacture" fill-in quaternions for that period like we usually do. Due to the contingency mode, we didn't start that fill-in until Sep 14, whereas the C-mode ended early on Sep 13 according to my notes (is that right?). This quaternion problem probably explains why my arc from Sep 13-20 2001 had anomolous residuals on Sep 13. Frank-
