I'm generating all the scripts before I go, so his responsibility would be to generate the predicts. I've asked Gene Brower for the spk file delivery schedule during the holidays thinking that a couple of deliveries would be skipped, but the schedule remains as is: A delivery on Monday and one on Thursday. Three questions: - Since Monday 24th and Monday 31st are JPL holidays, would it be OK to use the SPK files that are generated the Thursday before to generate the predicts. The two Tuesday following are also JPL holidays .. I guess what am asking is can we use the SPK files that are generated on Thu 21st and Thu 28th to generate predicts for the week the follows? If so, then I'll be here on the 21st and I'll generate the predicts for the week following. - There may be SOE updates while I'm gone. Since I started working on MGS, I haven't seen an SOE update affect our measurements UNLESS there's a DSN coverage change. I'll ask Sami to pay attention to the DSN coverage, but I'm going to script all the passes using the current SOE. I'll put the current SOE name in the email notifications, but if they get updated, I'll ask Sami to try to update the logs, but it may be difficult for him to keep track of that. Yesterday you said that if the SOE has the correct ingress/egress times that I don't necessarily need to update the log. Would this still be the case? - fgain values. I'm setting it for the 34-m to 58 and for the 70-m to 65. We may be able to go with 57 with some 34-m stations, but if it doesn't make much difference to you, I'd rather keep them all at the same value for now. Since I'm scripting 3 weeks in advance, what do you think I should do with the fgain values? How do you think the SNR will change in the next 3 weeks? I can decrease (I assume it will be decreasing?) the values by 1 dB for every week of scripting or just keep them the same. Getting closer to departure date .. stress level very high. Regards, Aseel To: aseel@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov Subject: Re: Scripting in Advance Cc: >I guess what am asking is can we use the SPK files >that are generated on Thu 21st and Thu 28th to generate predicts >for the week the follows? I see no problem with that. The position of the signal in the passband has not been a problem since MGS was in aerobraking. I don't think a slightly stale SPK file will cause us to start losing data. >I'll put the current SOE name in the email notifications, but >if they get updated, I'll ask Sami to try to update the logs, but it >may be difficult for him to keep track of that. Why don't you let Sami off the hook. As long as we have a "reasonable" SOE, we can manage. Where the SOE comes in handy is if we see odd behavior in the signal. We can go back to the SOE to see whether there was some unusual activity -- either on the spacecraft or the ground. If we're doing that detective work and we notice there are more recent ones in the archive than the one that appears in the log, then we'd probably look at the newer ones. The main reason for having a record of the SOE is to give us an idea what sequence was used as the basis for planning -- not to have an absolute records of EVERYTHING that went into an experiment. To achieve the latter, we'd have to enter all the red-line info into the electronic SOE; and no one has agreed to that level of detail. >fgain values. I'm setting it for the 34-m to 58 and for the 70-m >to 65... Those seem OK. The spacecraft is getting farther away. If anything changes, it will probably be that the signal gets slightly weaker as time moves forward. A slightly weaker signal does not really hurt us; what we do NOT want is saturated A/D converters. Taking a plausible SNR, then backing off slightly is conservative and exactly what I would do. >Getting closer to departure date .. stress level very high. Clearly nothing job-related is causing stress; you're right on target here with your preparations. make sure you have tickets and enough documents to get you back into the country. And don't accept mysterious packages from strangers ... FYI: Ray Williams of Data Control looked into the RSR_MASTER question, and right now I have a query running from mgrs. I'm modifying some of my scripts so this can be automated.
