The 9X Directorate has spoken! After developing a list of candidate names for the Directorate and implementing two rounds of voting, we have a new name for the Directorate. It should be pointed out that the voting by the EC members was similar to the Directorate vote. And the winner is...... The Interplanetary Network Directorate! That's IND, pronounced as "indy." You may also call it the "in" Directorate. Some of you expressed passionate positions for or against each of the names on the final list, including IND. While the voting won't please everyone, this name will serve us well. On the simplistic side, the name and initials are shorter and the initials are pronounceable. On a higher level, the name connotes a unifying theme for the Directorate. (An "and" in any name can imply a forced union of two dissimilar entities.) The Interplanetary Network is a simple banner under which we can define an all-encompassing entity that "brings the sensor to the scientist and the planets to the public."
