The maneuvers will affect Radio Science in 3 orbits. Our measurements will still be scheduled (turn telemetry off, fix sub-reflector ... etc), but the maneuvers will turn the s/c away from earth around 20 seconds before ingress. The affected orbits are 14194, 14206 and 14222 in sequence mm177. The sequence team would like to know if we are OK with that. If we're not, it is possible to rebuild the whole mini-sequence, but it will take a lot of effort. Please let me know. From my own point of view, this might be a good opportunity to check the HGA pointing and pattern. Can we get details on the maneuver, such as where the HGA beam goes during those 20 seconds? How about adding a mini-AZCAL (cross-hair) by taking a couple minutes rather than just 20 secs? We won't get much out of the occultations, I don't think. How can the sequence team be DESIGNING a mini-sequence only four days before they execute that completely reorients the spacecraft? If you mean in the future, it sounds like a reasonable request to me. However, MGS is already getting more coverage than required, so it may be difficult to ask for more. I did ask the sequence team to try to avoid such conflicts in the future. I was told that such maneuvers are scheduled every six months, and there were some back in October, but I don't remember hearing about them. Pauline Hwang from the sequence team was the one who noticed the conflict when she was reviewing the sequence, and she brought it to my attention. She said that the sequence team is more aware now of what affects Radio Science, so they'll try avoid conflicts or at least let us know about them more in advance.
