It will be installed on RSR2 once we are ready. - The sooner we switch RSR2 to the new software, the better. However, we first need to make sure that there are no problems with RSR1 data. - June 5th is Cassini's month long Solar Conjunction Experiment (SCE). Cassini RS will be using RSR1 at all complexes (RSR1 and RSR3 at SPC-10). We should try to upgrade RSR2 and test before Cassini's SCE when I'll have to free up RSR1. - We need to allow for about a week of testing (parallel RSR1 and RSR2 data) after RSR2 is upgraded. - Starting this week, I will be collecting data on both RSR1 and RSR2, but will only playback RSR1 data. RSR2 data will be saved as backup for a few days in case there are problems with RSR1 data. - When the software is installed, the disk will be wiped out, so any data files that are on the RSRs will be deleted. We need to make sure that we have all RSR2 data before the installation. - VLBI will be using the RSRs at SPC-10 and SPC-40 on 5/18, 5/24, 5/28. Both RSR1 and RSR2 need to be operational on those days so that they use 1, and we use 2. - Our group is moving to another building. The move will start this weekend, and the plan is to move the operations area sometime next week. I wouldn't want the upgrade to happen at the same time the ops machines are being moved. That moves the upgrade to the week after next. With VLBI using one RSR on the 28th, the earlier date for an upgrade that week is the 29th! - Waiting until the 29th gives us a chance to collect RSR1 (new software) data over all complexes, and gives Joe some time to process them using next week's reconstructed SPK file. (Joe, sounds good?) We will also have exactly a week before Cassini's SCE to test RSR2 (with the upgrade) date. Sal, is that cutting it too short? The Cassini group won't be affected by the upgrade as long as they have RSR1 back in time for their SCE. - Cassini RS would like to cleanup the RS TDS and remove unnecessary data files before their SCE. The files on the RS TDS do not get deleted until we (RS) give the OK (this was not the case with the old TDS prior to November of last year). Please let me know if I should keep certain MGS data files. There maybe files there now that are months old, so we can request that files that are over a week (or more?) old be removed. Any comments, questions or suggestions? I know that Dick is away until the 17th, so I don't expect a response from him before then. His report follows: I have investigated the frequency stability of a number of open-loop RSR recordings from 2002/136-137. The recordings were acquired simultaneously with RSR1 using new software installed on 2002/134 at each SPC and RSR2 with existing and established software. Results of quick look processing for the two sets of recordings were essentially indistinguishable. I used the latest NAV trajectory reconstruction (spk_m_020511_OD14186-14272_rec_V1) for the Allan deviation computations. The results may be found in the tables below. For the comparison, I selected the recording with the highest SNR from the middle of each of the four passes over the two-day period where data were recorded with both RSR1 and RSR2. Based on these measurements of Allan Deviation, I fail to see any significant difference between the performance of RSR1 with the new DSI 6073-OP-B Ver 3.2 software and RSR2 with the existing software. There was no appreciable difference in stability between the two RSR's at any integration time for any of the occultations. Furthermore, the small differences in stability do not seem to consistently favor one RSR over the other.
