The Maser went down on DOY 170, and since the problems cleared up in the past few days (no mention in the health reports), Sal suspects that the bad Maser was the cause of the problem. Maser1 went down during a Cassini pass (DR # M100807), and it was replaced with Maser2. The reason it went down was the power supply, which Sal says could cause signal amplitude variations. Since the RSRs are being used extensively nowadays (MGS, Cassini's solar conjunction experiment, and soon GLL's Solar Corona Experiment), and since the problems seem to have disappeared for now, Sal and I think that we should delay asking SPC-60 to further investigate the problem. You relayed a message from Andre about 10 days ago suggesting we check BVR output so he could isolate the oscillating problem better. I looked, but it appears we are not capturing the AGC at SPC 60 now from the DSN Monitor stream. This was something Sami, you, and I were going to talk about at the next to last RST meeting but never did -- isolating monitor channels deterministically, rather than simply guessing where they will appear in the data stream. But Andre's request didn't make much sense. We already have examples of oscillating data when two RSR's were running in parallel -- one showed oscillations, the other didn't. I got the feeling Andre hadn't been paying attention. >Sal suspects that the bad Maser was the cause of the problem. Maser1 >went down during a Cassini pass (DR # M100807), and it was replaced with >Maser2. The reason it went down was the power supply, which Sal says >could cause signal amplitude variations. That would explain the symptoms recently, but not when we had two RSR's in parallel and outputing different sample values. >Since the RSRs are being used extensively nowadays (MGS, Cassini's >solar conjunction experiment, and soon GLL's Solar Corona Experiment), >and since the problems seem to have disappeared for now, Sal and I think >that we should delay asking SPC-60 to further investigate the problem. I don't think I'd use the word "disappear". But the oscillations do seem to have gone into remission -- since you got back. I think the solution is to keep you very close to operations. Cassini and Galileo may want to share your presence, but we should negotiate that carefully. If we see something in the future, we can raise questions again. I've not asked Joe directly, but I've still not heard him say much about anomalies in the frequency/phase data associated with the amplitude oscillations. If that's true, there may not be much effect on Hinson's analysis even when we have 2 dB oscillations peak-to-peak. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From joe@nova.stanford.edu Tue Jun 25 03:37:54 2002 Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 20:35:20 -0700 From: Joe Twicken To: Dick Simpson 723-3525 Cc: aseel@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov, kusza@magellan.stanford.edu, Sami.W.Asmar@jpl.nasa.gov Subject: Re: SPC-60 Modulation Problems To date, I have processed RSR data through 2002/167.
