The points are color coded by SPC. I think that the new procedure began with the SPC 10 pass on 2003/128. There were two recordings with 70-m antennas at SPC 10 on 2003/126; these had higher SNR (but not 6 dB higher) than typical. Al: Aseel asked me to send you a brief report. We have processed about a week's worth of MGS radio occultation to check whether the new subreflector procedure affects the data. As it happens, the week was about half under the old procedure and half under the new. And only a single pass was MSPA, where we would expect differences. I have also looked at roughly another week using our quick-look process. As expected, there's nothing that jumps out from these occultations. I would expect a slight improvement in SNR using the new procedure because the subreflector would be better positioned for the elevation angle where the SRC was frozen; but it will take a lot of passes before we see this since we're looking for a fraction of a dB when normal fluctations from occultation to occultation can be several dB from other causes. There was a brief discussion at the meeting this morning about extending the procedure to all passes -- not just the ones with MSPA. I see no reason not to make the extension. As noted above, Radio Science should see a slight improvement in SNR; and the other experiment (such as MARIE) will not suffer the data problems that have been associated with fixing the SRC at 45 degrees. I would expect having a consistent policy for ALL passes would be simpler operationally than having one procedure for MSPA and a different one for other passes. I gather a new DSN keyword will have to be invented to cover this; but I encouraged the people concerned to proceed. Let me know if you have questions. I can be contacted most easily via e-mail.
