The original plan was to have the campaign later in the week, but it was moved earlier because the DSN coverage was better and 12 egress measurements (full set) can be scheduled. Egresses will take place over DSS-25, -34, -63, and -15. The first egress measurement (18836e) will start at 6:36 am on 5/26 (DOY 146), and the last (18847e) will end at 4:21 am on 5/27 (DOY 147). Elias Barbinis, Doug Johnston and I will take turns in monitoring the measurements. Also on DOY 146 is a GSSR test. This is a repeat of the test that failed a couple of months ago, but it is a bit longer this time around. We will need to let the Project know if our data were impacted by GSSR. DSS 15 has had severe interference previously during GSSR transmissions, but the results on day 146 are ambiguous. Levels to the A/D converters were set too high, so there is significant clipping when the MGS spacecraft signal was present. The clipping occurred regardless of whether GSSR was transmitting or not. 10:54:00-11:03:00: There were irregularities in the noise baseline; these were present before acquisition (10:54-10:55) when GSSR was transmitting and also after MGS went into occultation (11:00-11:03) when GSSR was off. 12:51:00-13:01:00: There were irregularities in the (saturated) carrier level before occultation and in the noise level for a short time after; the total 'irregular' interval was 12:54:36-12:58:52. This matches almost exactly the GSSR ON time. During the rest of the recording, the signal and noise levels were stable. I think the bottom line is that the DSS 25 test shows no impact from GSSR operation. There is PROBABLY some overloading of the front end at DSS 15 - causing the variable signal and noise levels. But the fact that this could be shown during only one of the recording sessions is puzzling. I would recommend not trying to use DSS 15 in parallel with GSSR; but I think we knew this already. DSS 25 looks like a good pairing.
