He clarified to me that MGS and MEX resolved their problems with the MGS ranging channel interfering with MEX uplink as follows: MGS will not change the range parameter. MEX will identify times of critical uplink and let MGS know by e-mail a few days in advance. For those passes, MGS will turn off uplink range tones altogether. This is now not expected to happen too often. So the ranging data we've been getting is in the same old configuration. Having said that, LMA just submitted and got approved an MCR to change the MGS ranging parameters due to the increased distance to Mars. Their reques is: Increase ranging integration times to T1=140s, T2=30s. This will result in a cycle time of 360 s. (currently T1=62 s and T=10 s resulting in a cycle=142 s) Reason: Increasing Mars range reduces the SNR of the ranging signal. Additional integration time is needed to improved the quality of ranging data.
