This should have dissappeared with a parameter update to the momentum control patch we performed yesterday. So RS egress data from DOY 024 onward should be free of the side-lobe effect -- we hope! It only took ~20 seconds to scan through the two sidelobes and up the main beam, so it's not really surprising that the station acquisition of one-way downlink was at the end of that 20 seconds, and so missed the pattern. Also, with updates every 10 seconds we wouldn't have seen much in the way of a pattern anyway. If we assume that this is the antenna pattern, that first sidelobe out is about 2.6 degrees off boresight and the second lobe is at 5.2 degrees. 2.6 degrees in ~10 seconds is about 0.25 degrees per second for a rate, which is ~five times faster than the nadir tracking rate of about 0.05 degrees per second. If we were moving the HGA as well as tracking nadir then I could see how we might get that fast an aspect change. Maybe Dale could answer why we might be seeing the Earth travel through the HGA beam at this 0.25 deg/sec rate? The fact that we see sidelobes rather than a simple rise to the -4 dB level means that we missed the egress occultation as well as the ingress. I looked ahead about 24 hrs, and the sidelobes are still there. We have suspended processing the more recent data until we understand better what is going on - though the answer will probably only change how we describe the data, not the method. I think Dale thinks that we were still closing in on the target angles when you were recording. So the actual elevation angle rate should have been near 0.5 degrees/second, rather than 10 times less for Earth tracking. If I use the two sidelobes as markers rather than what I did the other day (using the peak as a time "tick" has the problem of being where/when the HGA is stopping -- hard to pinpoint the epoch) I get a rate closer to 0.5 degrees per second. So I think your plot is consistent with us still being in the process of racing to the target angle at the time of your measurement. The fact that we see sidelobes rather than a simple rise to the -4 dB level means that we missed the egress occultation as well as the ingress. I looked ahead about 24 hrs, and the sidelobes are still there. We have suspended processing the more recent data until we understand better what is going on - though the answer will probably only change how we describe the data, not the method. Ray Jackson has accepted a full-time position elsewhere and will be leaving our group shortly. Given our funding expectations for the next 12 months, it seems unlikely that we can replace him. Switching to DVD is one measure we can take to reduce further the work load in capturing and archiving these data. We switched the ODY archive to DVD nearly a year ago. So far as you are concerned, the DVD should look the same as the CD's have - except that possibly you may see directory and file names displayed in upper case on Suns, and the physical volumes contain more data and appear at a slower rate. There was a plan at CN to copy the existing volumes to DVD; and we were going to choose a volume naming convention that would allow the two to be merged almost seamlessly. According to Betty Sword, that effort never really got off the ground. So we will continue with the current naming scheme and leave it to others to do consolidation (if needed). We have also had discussions with CN personnel regarding conventions to be adopted when writing DVD volumes. We believe our choices are consistent with PDS standards; the people pushing alternatives at CN have apparently left, and I have seen no SCR activity in this area in a long time.
