The antenna has to move from +120 to +130 at that point. This will take approximately 20 seconds. The Earth is moving at about 3 deg/minute, so it should take the Earth 1:20 to reach occultation egress, and it should only take the antenna 20 seconds to get on target, so I should have 1 minute of pad. Seems like that ought to be enough, maybe not? How much pad do we need, and I do mean NEED. If we pad this too much the momentum control is going to suffer because we have such short occultation times for the next few months. I didn't think so, but Joe Twicken thought maybe yes. I'm not familiar enough with the sequencing business to offer anything intelligent. Dave Hinson reviewed Joe's geometry calculations and concluded that the occultations today are lasting about 24 minutes and are occurring at about 24 deg S latitude. So these are valuable data for radio science if we can get the HGA on Earth point before egress. Since we (MGS RS) have already sacrificed ingress, this would appear to be easy from our point of view; but you obviously have other, competing concerns that must be factored in. In March-April, when the occultation duration becomes less and the geometry even more grazing, the analysis and interpretation of the radio data becomes more difficult. But we're not ready to give up in early February. For your information, all nine of the most recent occultations have the HGA rewind on top of egress (see below). Then the transponder is configured for carrier-only at about 01:28 before exit occultation. So you probably should add enough pad to get positioned at least 90 seconds before the predicted occultation exit. That would be about 30 seconds more than you currently have. Just to be safe you might want to go for a full minute of additional pad. Then if the actual exit should move even earlier, Dick will still get a one-way carrier (with subcarrier and bits modulated) and that should be better than not getting any occultation exit data. I don't see any way to conveniently move the transmitter on any earlier, so I hope the exit occultation timing errors don't get large enough to need it. This has got to be due to the difference between NAV's occultation model and the actual Mars surface, in a near-grazing orientation. In other words, we're exiting occultation over different lattitudes than normal, and apparently the elevation of these lattitudes is well below the average. Bill
