I know what some of the problem is, but solving it may be painful. I'm trying to match my hypothesis with which orbits the R/S report says are unusable. If it matches up then we can talk about potential solutions. At least some of the problem is coming from momentum management, but it's a little difficult to explain. The non-comm target sometimes overachieves in driving momentum negative. The momentum control patch then comes in during comm orbits and tries to correct this. The position that it uses for this is well away from where the autotrack start position is, and would require 5 minutes of margin to accommodate. This would be a pretty severe impact, but we could try changing the non-comm position to not be so severe. Let me look at a little more data, and then we'll see where we go. Is there any ongoing activity to try to make this better; or are we out of options? It's not obvious that ALL occultations are being lost; but the fraction does seem to be at something like 50 percent. Dave Hinson, who would be analyzing the data has said that the geometry is so close to grazing during March, that he's not sure he can get any useful science out - even if we solve the rewind problem. If you think further improvement in managing the HGA rewind time vs egress is hopeless, we may recommend that the occultation data collection be suspended. Your thoughts?
