Maybe you can extract a signal out of there (besides MEX, of which there is plenty). I can put these on RSOPS2 or the TDS, whichever would work better for you. I'm not sure which is faster for you or electronically, but for me it makes no difference. I'm not sure we can do much with them until next week, by which time the no-command recvoery may have started. Joe is working on the high time resolution processing of days 306-308 now; and he wants to take tomorrow off. If you think there's anything that could be particularly interesting, I'd recommend putting it on the TDS and sending us the usual e-mail. That way the data will be picked up and started down our automatic handling system in time for Joe to deal with it Monday. The 16 kHz may be a little hard to swallow, however, since everything we run on MGS expects 2 (the s/w is written to be flexible, but I don't think it's ever been tested). If you were just tuning around, however, I don't know whether this is worth the time. Recordings where the receiver was tuned to the USO or AUX OSC frequency would make the most sense. The following conclusions seem to be holding up: 1. We are seeing ingress occultations by the atmosphere. Both the amplitude extinction and the frequency are consistent with the ray's passing through the atmosphere before being cut off by the solid surface. At DSS 43, the occultation is within 1 second of the time predicted in mm500b.05.tsoe; at DSS 34 it's more like 25 seconds (but we have had to integrate more even to see the DSS 34 signal). For the occultation at 02:47:24 the carrier appears suddenly only about 35 seconds before the occultation; this would be cause for alarm in routine operations since we like a baseline of several minutes. 2. We do NOT see egress occultations. The carrier signal appears 1-4 minutes after the predicted egress time (mm500b..05.tsoe). There is no sign of an atmospheric signature in the frequency data. The longest wait was the first egress at DSS 43 (01:31:30) with the carrier rising out of the noise to about +5 dB at the end of the recording. On the others, the carrier suddenly appears (typically +5 dB above the noise in DSS 43 terms) about 30 seconds after the predicted solar eclipse exit. 3. The carrier level is not very stable. There is some uncertainty in the power values because of the integration we are doing, but what we are seeing are +5 dB ramps over 90 seconds (item 2 above), +/-2 dB oscillations over a couple minutes, and a -3 dB ramp BEFORE an ingress over 5 minutes. I am annotating a piece of mm500b.05.tsoe and will distribute the result to this list when we have finished (perhaps including some of the figures if I can get them into a decent format). But I thought a quick summary in advance of the 1800 MST call might be helpful to set the stage.. For strong(er) signals we were able to get good results using 4 second integration. For the weaker signals (34-m antennas after the anomaly) we had to back off to 8 seconds.
