We timed our coverage to parallel MEX coverage and ranging. The previous day - we saw no signal over 4 orbits with DSS-63. MEX was not transmitting at that time. This morning we did see a signal similar to those seen on 317 and 322. We have essentially discounted the signals to be MGS due to the following: 1. The signal continued 10 minutes past our scheduled occultation entry. (Although there is a small possibility that by this time MGS could be way off predicts and 10 minutes is not outside the threshold) 2. The signal, after tracking past occultation, went away exactly RTLT from the time DSS-63 went Drive Off. 3. Radioscience also reports that in addition to this CH 16 signal, there was also one in the CH 20 range that followed the sweep. All of this information - the last two days of focused testing, along with the earlier signals appear to completely discount these signals as MGS. Nevertheless, we will continue investigating all of the Radioscience signals "seen" as well as "looking" for new signals. Commands to take out the 10 degree solar array offset will be brought to a command conference this afternoon - with radiation scheduled for late afternoon through the evening today. Sporadic uplink passes through the weekend will be used to radiate the previously approved swap to sam side a & b, swap to bus b, mola pob heaters off and STRPAN commands. The commands to provide new CMode Sun Com Power targets, in 45 degree increments, are scheduled for a command conference at the 09:15 MST (Monday) Plans and Status meeting. The command files will be matched to uplink passes throughout the week. This strategy will also be reviewed at the command conference. MEX is scheduled to image MGS on the 9th of December. Distance will be approximately 173km. A tentative plan is in place for MRO to attempt to "locate" Odyssey using their Star Tracker. It seems that an orbit or two of occultation info was missed on DOY 308, which occurred between OPTG deliveries - I'll try to track that information down. The times listed are all ERT, but it's a rough approximation based on a OWLT of 00:21:00. I can easily calculate the exact time if we need it for any of the orbits. It appears from the OPTG that starting today around 12:00, MEX ended it's period of occultations until May or so of next year. So from now on, they will be in Earth view all the time. Our assumption is that the suspension of ranging tone from Earth is a good solution, since with no uplink of a ranging tone they should be no return. Due to the way the MEX transponder is operated, if we wanted to disable ranging onboard as well, we would have to change this parameter manually in all switch-on sequences (several per day) or make a general database update. The manual mechanism is error prone; also we did not envisage a database update because we were assuming that the Ranging suspension would be rather temporary. If you have suspicion that signals you have seen over the past weeks could still be created by the MEX Ranging transponder responding to some other uplink than the ranging itself, please let us know and we could manually change the settings to Ranging Disabled for sequences not yet uploaded (ie at the horizon of a week) and for a duration of e.g one week or so. 2. Has ESA suspended MEX ranging operations or does ESA continue with range operations? [MD] All ESA stations has suspended MEX ranging operations since the day they received the instruction (7 November). Our records show no ranging from ESTRACK ever since, but we could double check if you want. We only know of one case, in the early days after this instruction was sent, when a ranging process was nonetheless started on a DSN station, probably between 8 and 10 November. We could look for the exact date and time if you want. 3. What is the MEX s/c ranging channel bandwidth? [MD] The maximum occupied bandwidth of the ranging signal is specified by ECSS standards (2.5 * ranging tone frequency if I understand correctly), however if you need we could further check in house if we have more information the actual values observed for MEX.
