The disk partition holding MGS SPK files on our magellan server was nearing capacity. We have removed files that appeared to be predictions (files with creation dates well before start/stop dates, and files that extended more than a week or two beyond the creation date). This freed about 1 GB, which should be sufficient for the near term. All files removed should be archived on CD-R and can be restored. Users seeking SPK files not found in /users/z16/SPK (or its alias /users/z00/SPK) should send a request to reload to rsimpson@magellan. As noted earlier, we will not list such artifacts in future reports unless these signals prove to be problems in data analysis. The HGA turned away from Earth point before ingress in data beginning 1999/121-22:27:00. One occultation at DSS 45 on 1999/122 was lost because the SPC Server was down. Only one occultation was scheduled at DSS 45 that day. All four occultations at DSS 54 on 1999/122 were lost when DSP tuning predicts did not load. There are good surface echoes in at least two of the occultations listed above. Our surface echo extraction software failed on five of the six runs, however. We will investigate. Analysis -------- Trish Priest advised that the 2 kHz filter at SPC 60 had been changed. By running Simpson's surface echo extraction software we were able to pin the swap down to sometime after 1999/085 and before 1999/101. This was during the time when the HGA was being depolyed and calibrated; there were also several days during which the DSP was "stuck in Galileo mode" and no data were obtained from MGS. For purposes of Mars studies, it is not necessary to determine the swap time any more precisely than this. An new SPC 60 "filter function" has been generated using noise data collected using DSS 54 on 1999/113. The ripple on the new filter function is three times less than on the old.
