DSS 45 data have very stable baselines. DSS 65 amplitudes are very ragged (+/-0.5 dB) at the beginning of the pass but improve, presumably as elevation angle increases. DSS 15 baselines have very smoothly varying long period oscillations (+/-1 dB with periods of 10 minutes or longer; we see only about half of a cycle). Superimposed are weaker oscillations at much higher frequencies (+/-0.2 dB over approx 10 sec); these sometimes look sinusoidal, sometimes more like square waves, and they often have an envelope as though two notes were beating against each other. The predicted large "surface" echo was observed in the data beginning 1999/131-06:41:00. This confirms that at least some of these signals are real Mars phenomena and not artifacts of random (or other) errors in HGA pointing which would preferentially illuminate the surface. Trish Priest has requested clarification from LMA and they have promised a correction.
