Five of seven Unix machines supporting MGS work were hit -- the exceptions being the SOPC and Dave Hinson's computer. Whether the STARLab Web/mail server, which handles our Web pages, was hit is not known at this time. This does not appear to have been a malevolent intruder -- perhaps more interested in demonstrating weaknesses in systems (and covering tracks) than in damaging files. Recovery is nearly complete (to the extent we believe we have identified the problems). Problems with our data base software, connected in yesterday's report (HEA9181A.TXT) to D1.0 patch installation, may have resulted from the intrusion. Limited testing of the software today indicates it is working again. We have resumed queries for 1999/181 data, and will try to catch up today.
