Our magellan.stanford.edu server is back on line, but all accounts have been disabled pending contact with users and setting of new passwords. To the best of our knowledge, only selected system files were modified -- allowing unlimited access with root privileges to the intruder. We have restored the original files on magellan and are proceeding to the other machines. We will be installing new patches and otherwise tightening security as recommended by the Stanford Computer Security Office. At least 44 other Stanford computers were hit in the same wave of attacks. This is the second wave in the past month.
