Two OPT files are listed below under Ancillary Data. They cover the same time period (presumably with different assumptions about the future orbits); we do not have information about those assumptions. There is a detailed summary of AMD data quality at the end of this report. When we get the MGS (mapping) AMD files from the FIS, we store them on the MGS operations computers in a common area. I have finished updating a file of notes about problems with some AMDs and our management of this common area. The AMD problems may be of interest to those doing gravity work -- if they do not already know about them. Therefore I thought I would send this file out. Just a reminder. Remember that we have been consistently finding a bias in the AMD values. The velocity perturbations derived from the SCT AMD file have been consistenly ~30% larger than the values we derive from the doppler data. Our software converts each AMD on the AMD file to a "small force", or impulsive maneuver, defined by a (end) time, delta-R and delta-V. We can solve for the delta-V, but not the delta-R. Because of the AMD bias, this means that the delta-R used in our force models is biased. This affects the data fit and the estimation of delta-V. Decreasing the a priori "AMD" delta-R and delta-V by ~30% seems to give a better fit to the residuals. We have recently started doing this as a part of our nominal operations. (This is done by scaling the AMD impulse bits for thrusters 1-8 by a factor of 0.7 .) ============================================================================= File of notes in MGS NAV AMD common area: 1) If delivered AMD files have nothing in them (except SFDU headers), they are kept here as the (unwrapped) zero byte files. This is so that one will see that these files have been retrieved from the FIS and examined. 2) The files "amdgen.99-100_2" and "amdgen.99-101" are identical. So file "amdgen.99-100_2" was removed from this directory. 3) On 5/19/99 it was determined that the quaternions on the AMD files we have been getting is for the reverse transformation (EME 2000 to S/C). Talking to LMA (Dave Eckhart), this should have been the case on all AMD's since MOI. This has now been fixed in the LMA AMD deliveries. The file "amdgen.99-140" is the first one we received with the quaternion corrected. 4) (e-mail from 5/21/99) All of the original AMD's (in common area) before amdgen.99-140 have been moved into the special subdirectory "Bad_Quat". These AMD's have a problem with their quaternions. Versions of these AMD's, with the quaternions fixed, were then created and put in the nominal area: /home/mgs/od/dat/amd In summary, all AMD's in the nominal AMD common area (/home/mgs/od/dat/amd) should now have the correct quaternion information. 5) File amdgen.99-264 has a zero delta-T, zero pulse AMD as the next to the last AMD in that file. There is another zero delta-T, zero pulse AMD in the file amdgen.00-026. Ignore these AMDs. 6) For the end of 1999 & beginning of 2000, there was a problem with the AMD automatic generation S/W. Every once in a great while, it would generate incorrect times (specifically, end time) for the very last AMD in an AMD file. The following files have been checked again and seem to be OK, except for exceptions noted below. (Other files have been checked before, but not reverified this time.) amdgen.99-26* amdgen.99-27* amdgen.99-28* amdgen.99-29* amdgen.99-35* amdgen.99-36* amdgen.00-00* amdgen.00-01* (is time of last AMD in amdgen.00-018 really OK?) amdgen.00-02* Files in which the above problem was noted include: amdgen.00-001 (amdgen.00-001.nav_fix is approximate correction, by NAV) amdgen.00-004 (amdgen.00-004_V2 is corrected AMD file, from SCT) 7) amdgen.00-008 incorrectly had thrusting from thrusters 9-12. These were zeroed out by a NAV fix, amdgen.00-008.nav_fix. (Note that these thrusters generate a zero magnitude delta-V, so thrusting by them does not affect our modeling anyway.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stuart Demcak | Mars Surveyor Operations Project (MSOP) stuart@zeus.jpl.nasa.gov | Jet Propulsion Laboratory ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
