From Sami Asmar we have received the following MGS status report: The spacecraft conducted nominal mapping operations during this week. Twice weekly sequences were uploaded and successfully executed by the spacecraft. On Friday, August 24 the spacecraft began a series of thirteen off-nadir scans across both polar caps. This technique allows the MOLA instrument topographic measurements in the regions precluded by nadir tracks due to the 92.7-degree orbital inclination. A change request was approved to continue this practice at monthly intervals (done three times previously) for the remainder of the primary mission. By end of mission, this activity will produce surface profiles with complete longitude coverage at 5-degree separation. A four-position per-orbit solar array stepping strategy was adopted to maintain a 5%/orbit power margin through aphelion (9/3-1/15/01). Limitation of these movements (vs. auto track) reduces microphonic noise during measurements by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer. The new sequence will be activated during the first week of September. Work began on a solution to mitigate telemetry loss during the short arc recorder playbacks while in the Beta Supplement configuration. The first spacecraft operation using a seventh partition with sequenced rewinds will begin on September 4. Approval was given for continuous operation of the MOLA for the remainder of the primary mission or until a large drop (>3mj) in laser output occurs. Special sequences, e.g. MOLA polar scans or RS egress occultations, will not be automatically carried forward into an extended mission. Such proposed activity will be reviewed by the Mission Change Board in light of expected targeting operations.
