PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 2000-12-06 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA0341A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= Aseel Anabtawi and Richard Springer both report that Tom Boreham, perhaps the single most important individual in establishing automated, near real-time delivery of open-loop data from the DSN to MGS query servers, passed away after being admitted to a hospital Monday night with an apparent heart attack. He had been having health problems since earlier this year. There has been no decision concerning how to replace Tom at JPL; Richard warns of possible "hiccups in the process" given Tom's extensive role in ground data systems. In an unrelated development, Bryan Allen has left the SA office at JPL. Bryan has been our primary contact over the past couple years. We were able to write our first data CD on the new (mgrsb) SOPC today. The operation was delayed by as yet unexplained errors reported by the GEAR software which claimed it could not find space for the 600 MB CD images on an almost empty 6 GB disk partition. The error messages abruptly went away after a number of unsuccessful attempts last night and this morning. We are sending our first CD to PDS for validation before embarking on a large production run. Aseel reports that the DSPs at SPC-40 have been repaired. Our quick look and more detailed analyses confirm that there are no errors in the latest data from DSS 34 (see below). Signal was weakest in the first; those data appear useful. A correction had been added before the last; another change was made after AOS; but these data will also probably be useful. Utility of the middle two will have to be judged after more sophisticated processing; there is some clipping, but perhaps not so much that the science value is lost.
