Immediately after egress occultations on even numbered orbits the carrier level sagged about 1.5 dB. This occurred over about 60 s, after which the level recovered about 0.5 dB in the next 180 s. This was observed during every even numbered egress (including the one in yesterday's report (HEA1010A.TXT)) and at every ground station (including the pair that both captured occultation 8254e). Symptoms are consistent with HGA control by a poorly derived set of quaternions; but it's not clear why the even numbered orbits would be affected and not the odd. Whatever the cause, it's clear that carrier level is 1 dB lower than what it could be shortly after egress, and the Project might want to look into improving the HGA pointing. This was a couple minutes after egress, and the character of the change was very different from the anomalies described above. Had the anomalies above not occurred, this particular incident would not have been included in our report.
