Sami Asmar reports the following MGS developments at JPL: 1. Ranging data acquisition will resume 1 February 2. By design there will be no RS egress scans in February (first month of the extended mission). The Project will make an evaluation and develop a plan on how to proceed for March and the following months -- until the end of Beta-supplement operations. 3. Tom Thorpe has asked that there be a plan for collaboration between RS and TES on Campaign F data processing. 4. Tom has also asked for a 3x4 ft print of the new Radio Science "logo" that could be used at the celebration, media show, and PSG in Von Karman Auditoruim on 31 January. Dave Eckart (LMCO) reports the spacecraft fuel and mass status as follows: 29.42 Kg Hydrazine remaining 3.12 Kg used over last 107 days. These data will not be useful for science. Input signal at the beginning of occultation 8370i (DSS 34, start time 2001/012-19:14:00) was also too strong. Radio Science personnel adjusted the attenuation levels to reduce the signal level. We resubmitted our query to start at 19:15:35, after the last attenuator change; the results appear to be satisfactory based on quick-look processing. The reason for the high levels in the first place (5-8 dB above normal) remains unknown. The station reported no unusual activity, and levels from closed loop systems were normal. Radio Science personnel are investigating. Data from occultation 8274i (DSS 65, start time 2001/013-03:05:00) were collected using DSN receiver tuning predicts because of problems with the regular predicts. Data from occultation 8278i (start time 2001/013-10:55:00) were collected at both DSS 65 (setting) and DSS 15 (rising). Data from occultation 8281i (DSS 45, start time 2001/013-16:48:00) have erratic signal levels (including several intervals when the signal disappeared entirely. Problems with the ground antenna were reported later in the pass (see below). Data from 8281i may not be useful for science. Data from occultation 8283i (DSS 45, start time 2001/013-20:44:00) have no signal. The ground antenna was declared "red" and DR #A05048 was filed. Data from occultations 8289i and 8290i (DSS 65, start times 2001/014- 08:30:00 and 10:28:00, respectively) were lost to DSP problems (DR #L04984). Data from occultation 8293i (DSS 25, start time 2001/014-16:21:00) have a signal dropout immediately prior to ingress. The signal returns briefly, but it is not clear from quick-look processing whether the occultation was captured. In any case, the data will be severely compromised for science, if not lost entirely. Aseel Anabtawi reports a single "circular buffer" error in logs from the pass; this could explain the data loss, but it is more common for many error messages to be generated for these types of failures. Data from occultation 8293i (start time 2001/014-16:21:00) were collected at both DSS 25 (setting) and DSS 45 (rising). Hence, the loss to Mars science from the "circular buffer" problem immediately above should be minimal. Data from occultations 8299i-8302i (DSS 65, start time 2001/015-04:07:00 through 10:00:00) were lost because the DSP was "red" (DR #L04987). Data from occultation 8306i (DSS 15, start time 2001/015-17:51:00) were lost in GDS for about 24 hrs. They have since been located by Data Control and transferred to Stanford. Data from occultation 8306i (DSS 15, start time 2001/015-17:51:00) appear to have been collected using DSN receiver tuning predicts. Data from occultation 8314i (DSS 63, start time 2001/016-09:32:00) are missing the first record; this would have little impact on science. The data also have SNR 8-10 dB lower than expected. Because of several changes in attenuator setting before ingress, the query was resubmitted to start at 09:34:48, and only those results have been saved.
