Dick Simpson says he has a recent backup tape and is going to restore what he can; with luck, this should cause no long-term problems. Short-term, it means that Dick is doing something other than what he originally planned to do today and there's not really anything much I can do to assist him. How'd I manage to do this? I noticed yesterday that the /u partition on mgrs was getting pretty full, helped along by some large tar files I've placed there in preparation for the D4.2 sequence install. Upon further investigation, I noticed several subdirectories which had not been accessed since Mars Observer days and so began carefully to delete the obviously old and unused ones. My mistake was in back- grounding the "bin/rm -fr" on what was to be the final directory I had identified; of course, you all can see what's right next to the "&" key on a standard keyboard... yes, the "*" character. I was, as usual, working on more than one thing at a time so by the time I noticed something was wrong a lot of files had been deleted. I still remember with anguish the last time I did this, in 1991. I don't imagine I'll forget this slip any sooner. I'm not sure what to prescribe to make sure this doesn't happen again. The only obvious thing is for me NOT to delete files or do any cleanup on remote machines where I can't access a backup tape myself. But in the greater sense, "/bin/rm -fr" is a command which has to be used sometimes and occasionally mistakes are made. I welcome discussion and suggestions on this and any other topics. That seems approximately true in /u except that two directories from later in the list (perl4.19 and sse) are also gone. sse is explained by your "last command". Did you also remove perl4.19 separately? Within the /u/mors directory the situation is more complicated. The missing directories are edgar, hinson, karayel, and rsimpson which are randomly sprinkled through the total list which includes 21 from ahmad to rsimpson. This does not appear to be a removal in alphabetical order, so figuring out which of the remaining directories have been partially hit looks to be more difficult. I was just wondering if you have more insight into how /bin/rm would have been working in this case. It appears ufsrestore will overwrite existing files if I ask for them to be restored. Once I have this narrowed down, I should probably backup any files that were created in the past week before running my Jan 14 tape through ufsrestore. Or do you have a better idea? I am at the experience level of using ufsrestore maybe 2 times per year, so this is always a challenge. Fortunately, I'm usually only restoring one or two files. After consulting with Joe Twicken, I decided to remove the entire directory and restore it from the backup tape of 14/15 Jan. Joe and I believed the chances were very slim that any files would have been modified since 14 Jan, so it was better to wipe everything clean than to risk having partial files carried forward. There are a LOT of subdirectories here, explaining why the /bin/rm process might have been stuck here long enough for Bryan to kill it. /u/mors/local As noted in today's MGS RST health report, we will have lost the entries appended to /u/data/MGS/ECS/9068xxxx.ECS but I don't think it is worth trying to recover them. These are the summary engineering values that appear in each health report. The file contains nearly a year of data; we probably won't miss a week. Also reverting back to their 14 Jan forms are the AAREADME, ERRATA, CUMINDEX.TAX, and mk_voldesc files used in our raw data archiving. I have copied versions from the latest CD in the first three cases, and I have edited the mk_voldesc file so that all should be current. I don't believe there are any other impacts on our daily data handling. Several other archiving files were updated in the past week, but these are used in generating the reduced data CDs. The edits allowed inclusion of special data products from the surface reflection investigation. Those changes will have to be redone; the original work was a few hours, but the trick will be to remember what was done and where. Although we are overdue to produce the next CD of reduced data, no one has turned in any files to archive. So the urgency here is low. Hinson, Karayel, and Edgar have not used their personal directories in some time (e.g., not since 1998 in the most recent case). Simpson uses his directory regularly, but the number of changes to files in the past week may be zero; this will be watched. Joe: daily2cum ran successfully, the printout was stored in the binder, and the files removed from /users/c4/CD4 (before midnight). Accounts were set up for Naseem on both machines, and the agreed upon password seems to work. The environment on magellan is primitive but functional. ODR queries for the two most recent DSN passes were started and appear to be running normally. I will do the query Saturday morning, then you can take over. Bryan: It would still be desirable to clean out some of the archaic directories and files. But I leave Sunday and won't be back until Jan 31. Could we wait until then for the next cleaning session? The stand-by crew is quite competent, but I think they'd rather be sensitive to residual problems from the most recent accident than worry about the potential from a second one. You can disregard my earlier message and questions; we seem to have muddled through. But one surprise I had in working with ufsrestore was that it lays out the directory structure as soon as you "add" directories in interactive mode. When you type "extract" it fills in the files. But I was playing around in some places I shouldn't have been exercising "add" and found all sorts of directories being inserted even though I hadn't gone to the "extract" stage. In my limited experience I hadn't noticed this before and wondered whether this is expected. See you all in 10 days or so. The associated ingress recording for each of the exits that you mentioned was not captured. I don't know if these calibrations could have caused a repetitive baseline signature or not...
