This has two main implications for Radio Science: (1) we will not be able to acquire egress measurements during beta-supplement mode, and (2) there will be approximately 16 minutes of tracking data outage during each orbit while the HGA rewinds. In order to obtain some egress measurements, there will be four to eight days per month of fixed-HGA operations. During these periods, the spacecraft will be NADIR pointed for 12 orbits (no downlink) followed by 4 orbits with the HGA fixed and Earth-pointed (no NADIR observations). The fixed-HGA mode is very similar to the previous fixed-HGA periods which occurred both before Mapping and right after the HGA AZ gimbal anomaly. The fixed-HGA periods for March are as follows (in UTC ERT): 066/03:35 to 066/11:35 067/11:35 to 067/19:35 068/19:35 to 069/03:35 075/11:30 to 075/19:30 076/19:30 to 077/03:30 077/03:30 to 078/11:30 I will keep you informed of future fixed-HGA periods. -Trish -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From ppriest@airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov Thu Mar 16 04:04 PST 2000 Received: from thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.90.10]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id EAA22831; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 04:04:14 -0800 (PST) Received: by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov; id EAA02655; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 04:05:21 -0800 Received: from airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov(137.228.96.12) by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov via smap (V4.2) id xma002267; Thu, 16 Mar 00 04:05:04 -0800 Received: from mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.136.10]) by airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3+Sun/8.9.3) with ESMTP id EAA10720; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 04:05:15 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ppriest@localhost) by mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) id MAA17443; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 12:05:15 GMT Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 12:05:15 GMT From: Patricia Priest Message-Id: <200003161205.MAA17443@mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov> DSS: 65 Apparently-To: Apparently-To: Content-Type: text Content-Length: 271 Status: RO Orbit: 4569i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/09:11:00 End Record: 076/09:19:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4570i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/11:09:00 End Record: 076/11:17:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From ppriest@airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov Thu Mar 16 19:59 PST 2000 Received: from thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.90.10]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id TAA03650; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 19:59:20 -0800 (PST) Received: by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov; id UAA28409; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 20:00:28 -0800 Received: from airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov(137.228.96.12) by thorn.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov via smap (V4.2) id xma028330; Thu, 16 Mar 00 20:00:03 -0800 Received: from mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov [137.228.136.10]) by airmail.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3+Sun/8.9.3) with ESMTP id UAA02493; Thu, 16 Mar 2000 20:00:15 -0800 (PST) Received: (from ppriest@localhost) by mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov (8.8.8+Sun/8.8.8) id EAA17687; Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:00:15 GMT Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 04:00:15 GMT From: Patricia Priest Message-Id: <200003170400.EAA17687@mmrs.fltops.jpl.nasa.gov> DSS: 15 Apparently-To: Apparently-To: Content-Type: text Content-Length: 804 Status: RO Orbit: 4573i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/17:02:00 End Record: 076/17:10:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4574i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/19:00:00 End Record: 076/19:08:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4575i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/20:57:00 End Record: 076/21:05:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4576i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 076/22:55:00 End Record: 076/23:03:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4577i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 077/00:52:00 End Record: 077/01:01:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: Orbit: 4578i SOE: mm022c.01.tsoe Begin Record: 077/02:50:00 End Record: 077/02:58:00 Last Attenuation Change: SNT: Elevation Angle: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From flemoine@ares.gsfc.nasa.gov Tue Apr 11 09:40 PDT 2000 Received: from ares.gsfc.nasa.gov (ares.gsfc.nasa.gov [128.183.106.250]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA08753 for ; Tue, 11 Apr 2000 09:40:07 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <200004111640.JAA08753@magellan.stanford.edu> Received: by ares.gsfc.nasa.gov; Tue, 11 Apr 2000 16:40:22 GMT From: Frank Lemoine Subject: Orbit data files in march 2000 and general data quality To: rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 16:40:21 UTC Cc: dsmith@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov, zuber@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov, sfricke@ares.gsfc.nasa.gov, neumann@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov, flemoine@ares.gsfc.nasa.gov, drowland@helmert.gsfc.nasa.gov (David D Rowlands), trish@rodan.jpl.nasa.gov X-Mailer: Elm [revision: 212.4] Content-Type: text Content-Length: 1225 Status: R Dick: It looks like we are missing an orbit file on day 77 (march 17). I realize part of this is due to changes in mission mode, etc., but if we could just be assured of continuous quaternion coverage that would be a big help. -> Frank L. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From rsimpson Tue Apr 11 10:04 PDT 2000 Received: (from rsimpson@localhost) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) id KAA08941; Tue, 11 Apr 2000 10:04:25 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 10:04:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Dick Simpson 723-3525 Message-Id: <200004111704.KAA08941@magellan.stanford.edu> To: flemoine@ares.gsfc.nasa.gov, rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu Subject: Re: Orbit data files in march 2000 and general data quality Cc: drowland@helmert.gsfc.nasa.gov, dsmith@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov, neumann@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov, sfricke@ares.gsfc.nasa.gov, trish@rodan.jpl.nasa.gov, zuber@tharsis.gsfc.nasa.gov Content-Type: text Content-Length: 2340 Status: R >It looks like we are missing an orbit file on day 77 (march 17). >Was there really no tracking data on this day? Correct. That was during a period of Fixed High-Gain Antenna operations. Although the spacecraft did not execute the FHGA sequence (because of the MOLA thermal issue), the tracking schedule was never changed. Between about 19:30 on 2000-03-15 and 03:30 on 2000-03-18 there was only a single DSS 15 pass (2000-03-16T17:30 to 2000-03-17T 03:30:00). I'm not sure why there is NO ODF that dips into 03/17; but there is certainly not a LOT of data from that day. >Also, we find only one hour of tracking for which we have data >on day 76 (march 16) ... See above. >...and no data on march 05 (day065). Same problem -- except that was a date of REAL FHGA operation. Only 40 minutes of DSS 25 time fell into 03/05. >as a general comment, it seems like the data quality has >really deteriorated in the past 30-45 days; The quantity of >data has really dropped off; The quaternions are (s/c and solar >array) are showing frequent large gaps ... Until recently we have been "blessed" with schedule help from phantom spacecraft (MPL and DS2). Those missions are now over (in more ways than one); but we may still be benefitting from residual MCO planning. The number of DSN passes devoted to MGS has slowly been tapering off. Recall that the MGS requirement is for 8 hrs per day plus an additional 8 hrs of real time coverage every third day. So we've been doing quite well since late last year thanks to MCO, MPL, and DS2. The above does not explain the quaternion gaps, since those data should be included in the recorded playback that comes down during each pass. We are limiting our own queries so that there is at least 32 hrs between data acquisition at the spacecraft and our download. In principle, that should allow all data on the spacecraft to reach the ground if there is at least one DSN pass per day. I believe Boris is doing the same for the HGA kernels. I don't know what the procedure is for the Spacecraft Team (who generate the solar panel and bus quaternions). I'll leave this for Trish. She's away from JPL, but should be back Thursday. If the SCT is trying to generate their kernels too quickly, that might explain gaps. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From joe@neptune.stanford.edu Thu Apr 13 11:08 PDT 2000 Received: from nova.Stanford.EDU (nova [171.64.90.123]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA25927 for ; Thu, 13 Apr 2000 11:08:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: from neptune.Stanford.EDU (neptune.Stanford.EDU [171.64.90.149]) by nova.Stanford.EDU (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA15186; Thu, 13 Apr 2000 11:08:34 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from joe@localhost) by neptune.Stanford.EDU (8.9.3/8.9.3) id LAA05441; Thu, 13 Apr 2000 11:04:47 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2 [p0] on Solaris X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <200004131710.KAA18616@magellan.stanford.edu> Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 11:04:47 -0700 (PDT) Sender: joe@neptune.stanford.edu From: Joe Twicken To: hinson@nova.stanford.edu, rsimpson@nova.stanford.edu, joe@nova.stanford.edu Subject: RE: ODR Notice: /users/z19/procODR/01041658 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Length: 1406 Status: R (1) The 00761703.ODR recording began 100 seconds late, and there was a glitch at the beginning of the recording.
