The first ICO occurred in January 1999 and consisted of 8 tracks of observations. ICO #1 was our first opportunity to test the functionality of the the Cassini RS System. As a reminder, Cassini is the first spacecraft with specific Radio Science hardware on-board (not including USOs). On DOY 267, we will be repeating the RSS Quiet Test. The RSS Quiet Test was a test designed to allow Radio Science to "listen" to the other instruments so that we could determine how "noisy" they are. After analyzing the data from ICO #1, we determined that this test failed. On DOY 272, we will be doing Test D, an X-up/Ka-down test. Since we were on thrusters and not reaction wheels during ICO #1, we knew that we'd have to re-do this test. The other half of our activities are normal calibrations. On DOY 269, we will be doing a USO Test and a boresight calibration. The X-band and Ka-band boresights are slightly offset. We also expect them to drift slightly over time. One of the requirements for the GWE is that we update the Ka-band boresight within 30 days of the start of the experiment. We need time to validate and verify that process. On DOY 271, we will be doing pattern calibrations for both the X-band and Ka-band. These cannot be done simultaneously because each frequency band requires different endpoints and slew rates. Each of these calibrations takes about 4.5 hours. These activities were grouped together because of a concern from the Huygens Probe regarding our S-band Transmitter (SBT). The Probe observes a large thermal cycle everytime we turn ON the SBT. By keeping our calibrations close together, we can limit the thermal cycles to one. (The RST and the Probe have agreed that we would limit such cycles to less than 50 before the end of Probe mission. We have had about 10 cycles so far.)
