Hello, I didn't think you'd include this pass in today's report, so I was going to tell you about this once I was done with my GLL meetings today. Usually when we have to change attenuation values from one day to the next, it's by one step or at the most two. Today we had to change it by 4 to get the correct values. I'm not sure whether there was something special going on that caused this (weather problems maybe?!), but we'll watch tomorrow's pass closely. > Signal was weakest in the first; Weakest? I thought it was close to clipping on this one. > A correction had been added before the last; another change was made > after AOS; The attenuation value was changed in the script before it ran, but still got wrong values. The HGA was deployed on 1999/087. The few ODR's recorded on that day before the HGA deployment had ODR header errors (so I did not try to process them). There is still one fixed-mapping ODR that I may try to process by hand. I have also caught up with the profile summaries that you have generated for the early fixed-HGA mapping occultations, and posted the results on our web site... The student who has been handling most of the daily data collection didn't come in until about 12:30. So I kept doing queries until he arrived. >Today we had to change it by 4 ... That's strange. Sounds as though someone changed a gain setting farther up the chain. Both the noise AND the signal were higher by about 4 dB compared with the past few days. Weather might raise the noise power, but it would REDUCE the signal. >Weakest? I thought it was close to clipping on this one. Close -- and maybe a few of the most extreme samples were clipped. But, looking at the histogram, I don't think anyone would really be able to tell from working with the data. >The attenuation value was changed in the script before it ran, but still >got wrong values. There was another change at 16:44:56. It looked to me as though 1 dB was added to the attenuation at about 16:44:53 (same time for practical purposes). Either would have been OK, though the latter is probably a little safer if you're storing a new default value. My guess is the two middle occultations will be a little noisier than they should be but that all will probably be good enough for atmospheric profiles. From your point of view, the open question should be why this happened in the first place -- and whether it will happen again (or drop back 4 dB, which has less potential for mischief in the science). Thanks for the background. It really helps. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From joe@neptune.stanford.edu Thu Dec 14 18:08 PST 2000 Received: from neptune.Stanford.EDU (neptune [171.64.90.149]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA12630 for ; Thu, 14 Dec 2000 18:08:08 -0800 (PST) Received: (from joe@localhost) by neptune.Stanford.EDU (8.9.3/8.9.3) id SAA04033; Thu, 14 Dec 2000 18:07:54 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2 [p0] on Solaris X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <200012141943.LAA07527@magellan.stanford.edu> Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 18:07:54 -0800 (PST) Sender: joe@neptune.stanford.edu From: Joe Twicken To: joe@nova.stanford.edu, rsimpson@magellan.stanford.edu, hinson@nova.stanford.edu Subject: RE: ODR Notice: /users/z21/procODR/03491918 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Length: 1602 Status: RO (1) As mentioned in the health report, there were attenuation problems with the four recording at DSS 15.
