charset=us-ascii Content-Length: 2116 Status: RO Hello, We had another strange DSS 34 pass today. Last Friday, we had problems with the attenuation values jumping around. Wednesday, things were OK. Today, there was a big jump in signal level. The RMS values weren't jumping around. They were consistent, but they were saturating. The first measurement (8269i) will be of no use to science. The converters were completely saturated throughout the measurement. For the second measurement, we started with an attenuation value of 40. More changes were needed as follows: 42 at 19:11:00 43 at 19:11:43 50 at 19:15:23 For the third measurement, we started with attenuation value of 50, but a change to 49 was made at 21:09:38. This was done before the beginning of the recording (21:12:00), so it should not affect the data query times. The attenuation value for the last measurement was set to 48, and that seemed to be OK. Tim and Elias called the station to check if they were doing anything different that might have caused the jump in signal level, but the station said no. I left a message for Jesse Glance asking if the spacecraft was doing something different today, but I haven't heard back from him. In looking at the closed-loop AGC values during our measurement, they are around normal. If this was a spacecraft activity, we'd see a change in the closed-loop values also. Therefore, it seems to be a DSP only issue. I spoke to Trish about this. We suspect that this was the I/F not switching properly problem, but it doesn't really sound right either! If it was the I/F switch, we'd expect the signal level to go down (if it didn't switch properly from HEF, which was the configuration from yesterday, to BWG). Besides, it won't be such a big change. Trish thought this might be one of the random things with attenuation values that used to happen once in a while (mostly at SPC-60), and she never found an explanation for them. The next DSS 34 pass in not until DOY 027, but we'll keep an eye on the attenuation values at DSS 45 over the weekend just to make sure things are back to normal. Radio Science personnel are investigating. Hello, The SPC-40 pass on Saturday (DOY 027) was the first we've had over DSS 34 since DOY 012. There were four measurements total, and Elias reported that the signal levels were back to normal. We could not figure out what caused the increase in signal levels on DOY 012. The Ops Chief offered his help, but Sal and I thought that we should wait for another DSS 34 pass to see whether the change was permanent or if it was limited to that one pass. The next DSS 34 pass is on DOY 031 (Wed morning-afternoon), and we'll monitor that one closely to confirm that things are back to normal.
