I think everyone agreed that using periapsis in a near circular orbit is nasty. But imagine descending equator crossing in an equatorial orbit. Or imagine either in a geosynchronous orbit. On another subject -- we have some real problems in the 070 occultations. The first looks like egress with uplink ramping. We also have our spectral ripple in that one. There's a nice ingress surface echo in the second, and a beauty in the third. But the third also looks like the carrier was sweeping all over the place -- perhaps +/-800 Hz, compared with the normal +/-50 Hz for ramping. The sweeping started perhaps 1 minute after egress and probably didn't last long; but it's there in parts of two 60-sec average spectra. There's another ripple in the fifth occultation. I don't see anything either in #7. Must have been a very weak surface echo. I'll FAX you our plots from 1,3,5. Then I'll play around a bit with at least #3 to see whether I can figure out what was happening.
