Yesterday, during an earth occultation, MGS fault protection autonomously switched GDE electronics from side-A to side-B during an HGA rewind. The switch was interpreted as successful by the FSW and C-mode was not entered. An accumulation of "12 REDMAN counts" were cause for the swap. REDMAN counts discrepancies btw. HGA controller commanded motion and the sensed motion of HGA (error counts are produced indentically for motion polarity and/or no motion indications). It's also indeterminate whether the counts were "against" AZ, EL, or both directions. LMA believes it was AZ since that is the more exercised direction of motion during rewind. As a result, yesterday, LMA uplinked commands to increase HGA error threshold to 30 counts in hopes of avoiding future (similar) GDE swaps. LMA believes there is no real problem with GDE side-A electronics and will coordinate (CCR-383); a switch back to GDE side-A. If side-B is left as the active GDE, then any similar breach of HGA count threshold would result in immediate entry into C-mode (since switching to side-B would not be an option). There is also the pedestal which you noted in your message. Since we don't see same thing is data from 54 or 65, I wonder if it's a question of a bad connector or floating ground somewhere between the 63 electronics and the common part of the open-loop system. Spurs are on the order of -40 dBc, making these data potentially less useful than data collected through smaller antennas. In fact, our automated SNR calculation shows DSS 65 SNR 58-60 dB while DSS 63 is only 60-63, not the 6 dB difference you would expect (probably because of all the extra noise in the sidebands). The 60 Hz spurious are present in the IF signal. These are the observed facts using a strong signal of 8420 MHz generated by the RTSG: 1.-The 60 Hz spurious only appear at X-Band 2.-They are present independently of the maser or polarization used. 3.-Its magnitude is of about 40 dB below carrier when the signal is injected in pre-maser but falls to 50dB below carrier if the signal is injected post-maser. (Pre-maser 1 is noisier than Pre-maser 2 by ~ 4 dB) 4.-Replacing the x81 in the Local Oscillator chain didn't improve the situation. 5.-Using the 100 MHz reference from S-Band didn't make any change. 6.-It has not been possible to get a different 100 MHz signal from the CRG. even though point 3 lowers the degree of suspiction for the reference, I would be happier doing that change. Any help will be highly appreciated.
