This explains the MGS/MPL Delta-DOR testing that will be used as an independent verification of MPL navigation. There will be a few hours of MGS two-way data outage, but this should have no other impact to MGS RS. -Trish -------------------------------------- Date: 10/27/99 4:00 PM From: Joseph Beerer MGS will be turning on its DOR tones twice this week in support of an MPL navigation experiment called Doubly Difference Range. This experiment is similar to delta-VLBI, but without the quasar. It will provide an independent validation of the Near Simultaneous Tracking orbit solutions for MPL. This is the first time the tones have been turned on during our mission. The DOR tones will be on during the following times: DOY303 00:35:00-01:45:33 DOY305 00:05:00-02:47:40 These are tests of the tones and the ground equipment. There is no MPL involvement in these tests. There should be no effect on MGS data return because we have a 70-m station (DSS-43) scheduled during times when there is an MGS downlink. Turning DOR tones on causes a 1.5 to 2.0 dB reduction in telecom margin. Adding a 70-m station provides 5.8 dB margin increase compared to a 34-m HEF. The DDR experiment will be performed during the first three weeks of November, during the Goldstone to Canberra overlap. The MGS DOR tones will be on for the four periods noted below. During each period DSS-15 and DSS-43 will slew back and forth between MGS and MPL several times to acquire the DDR data. DOY307 00:30-02:30 DOY309 00:00-02:45 DOY312 00:25-02:25 DOY323 00:00-02:00 The first three periods will be in the MM008 sequence. Every effort is being made to minimize impact to science data collection. It will be necessary to adjust the S&E-2 periods to avoid loss of data. More information will be forthcoming as the sequence plans mature. This activity was approved in MCR 534 Rev B. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From trish@rodan.jpl.nasa.gov Fri Nov 5 19:49 PST 1999 Received: from godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.120]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id TAA16925 for ; Fri, 5 Nov 1999 19:49:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from 137.78.177.117 (trish-mac.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.117]) by godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id TAA13832; Fri, 5 Nov 1999 19:49:55 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199911060349.TAA13832@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov> Date: 05 Nov 99 19:48:46 -0800 From: Trish Priest Subject: DOY 302-308 Doppler Data Notes To: Alexander Konopliv , Frank Lemoine , Richard Simpson , Bill Sjogren , David Smith , "Dah-Ning Yuan" , Maria Zuber CC: Len Tyler X-Mailer: QuickMail Pro 1.5.4 (Mac) X-Priority: 3 MIME-Version: 1.0 Reply-To: Trish Priest Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by magellan.stanford.edu id TAA16925 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-Ascii" Content-Length: 512 Status: RO Hello, Below are some notes from the DSN Daily reports regarding possible problems with Doppler data. DOY 303 - DSS 34 and 45 had very heavy rain. DOY 304 - DSS 34 - About 07:02:00 UTC ERT the Doppler residuals were very large due to a bad uplink tune. The spacecraft dropped 2-way and went 1-way for the remainder of the orbit. DOY 306 - DSS 25 had problems locking the receivers after going two-way on three orbits. Also, the low noise amplifier (maser) had to be replaced about 00:54:00 UTC. -Trish
