This explains the MGS/MPL Delta-DOR testing that will be used as an independent verification of MPL navigation. There will be a few hours of MGS two-way data outage, but this should have no other impact to MGS RS. -Trish -------------------------------------- Date: 10/27/99 4:00 PM From: Joseph Beerer MGS will be turning on its DOR tones twice this week in support of an MPL navigation experiment called Doubly Difference Range. This experiment is similar to delta-VLBI, but without the quasar. It will provide an independent validation of the Near Simultaneous Tracking orbit solutions for MPL. This is the first time the tones have been turned on during our mission. The DOR tones will be on during the following times: DOY303 00:35:00-01:45:33 DOY305 00:05:00-02:47:40 These are tests of the tones and the ground equipment. There is no MPL involvement in these tests. There should be no effect on MGS data return because we have a 70-m station (DSS-43) scheduled during times when there is an MGS downlink. Turning DOR tones on causes a 1.5 to 2.0 dB reduction in telecom margin. Adding a 70-m station provides 5.8 dB margin increase compared to a 34-m HEF. The DDR experiment will be performed during the first three weeks of November, during the Goldstone to Canberra overlap. The MGS DOR tones will be on for the four periods noted below. During each period DSS-15 and DSS-43 will slew back and forth between MGS and MPL several times to acquire the DDR data. DOY307 00:30-02:30 DOY309 00:00-02:45 DOY312 00:25-02:25 DOY323 00:00-02:00 The first three periods will be in the MM008 sequence. Every effort is being made to minimize impact to science data collection. It will be necessary to adjust the S&E-2 periods to avoid loss of data. More information will be forthcoming as the sequence plans mature. This activity was approved in MCR 534 Rev B. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From trish@rodan.jpl.nasa.gov Thu Nov 4 11:24 PST 1999 Received: from godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.120]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA26374 for ; Thu, 4 Nov 1999 11:24:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from 137.78.177.117 (trish-mac.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.117]) by godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id LAA19982; Thu, 4 Nov 1999 11:24:32 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199911041924.LAA19982@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov> Date: 04 Nov 99 11:23:21 -0800 From: Trish Priest Subject: DDR Tests To: Alexander Konopliv , Frank Lemoine , Richard Simpson , Bill Sjogren , David Smith , Len Tyler , "Dah-Ning Yuan" X-Mailer: QuickMail Pro 1.5.4 (Mac) X-Priority: 3 MIME-Version: 1.0 Reply-To: Trish Priest Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by magellan.stanford.edu id LAA26374 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-Ascii" Content-Length: 1409 Status: R Hello, Doppler data on DOY 307, 309, and 312 from DSS 15 and DSS 43 will be odd due to the Doubly Differenced Ranging tests with MGS and MPL. Below is more detail about the Delta-DOR tests using MGS and MPL. Two antennas will slew back and forth between MGS and MPL. MGS will remain one-way throughout. MPL will be three-way with the uplink coming from a third station. MGS will have DOR tones All times are in UTC ERT. DSS 15 and DSS 43 will be doing this simultaneously: 307 00:30:00 start test pointed at MPL 307 00:35:00 to 00:55:00 track MGS one-way (The data may not start exactly at 00:35:00 since it has to slew to the correct position.) 307 00:55:00 to 01:25:00 track MPL 307 01:25:00 to 01:45:00 track MGS 307 01:45:00 to 02:30:00 track MPL 307 02:30:00 end of test 309 00:00:00 to 00:05:00 track MPL 309 00:05:00 to 00:30:00 track MGS 309 00:30:00 to 01:30:00 track MPL 309 01:30:00 to 01:50:00 track MGS 309 01:50:00 to 02:20:00 track MPL 309 02:20:00 to 02:45:00 track MGS 309 02:45:00 end of test 312 00:25:00 to 00:30:00 track MPL 312 00:30:00 to 00:50:00 track MGS 312 00:50:00 to 01:10:00 track MPL 312 01:10:00 to 01:20:00 track MGS 312 01:20:00 to 02:00:00 track MPL 312 02:00:00 to 02:15:00 track MGS 312 02:15:00 to 02:25:00 track MPL 312 02:25:00 end of test Please let me know if you have any questions. -Trish -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From trish@rodan.jpl.nasa.gov Thu Nov 18 09:37 PST 1999 Received: from godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.120]) by magellan.stanford.edu (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA22180 for ; Thu, 18 Nov 1999 09:37:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from 137.78.177.117 (trish-mac.jpl.nasa.gov [137.78.177.117]) by godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id JAA24187; Thu, 18 Nov 1999 09:37:48 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199911181737.JAA24187@godzilla.jpl.nasa.gov> Date: 18 Nov 99 09:36:54 -0800 From: Trish Priest Subject: DOY 309 - 320 Doppler Data Notes To: Alexander Konopliv , Frank Lemoine , Richard Simpson , Bill Sjogren , David Smith , "Dah-Ning Yuan" , Maria Zuber CC: Len Tyler X-Mailer: QuickMail Pro 1.5.4 (Mac) X-Priority: 3 Reply-To: Trish Priest MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-Ascii" Content-Length: 831 Status: RO Hello, Below are some notes from the DSN daily reports regarding possible problems with Doppler data. 309/06:02 DSS 45 Bad Doppler data.
