PDS_VERSION = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1997-09-26 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA7269A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Errata ====== Frank Lemoine has improved his model of terrestrial effects. A new version of Figure HEA7266A.PS1 is included with this report as Figure HEA7269A.PS1. See caption (mostly Frank's words) below for details. Miscellaneous ============= Uplink ramping was detected in ODF files by Frank Lemoine (report HEA7267A.TXT). That was unexpected and, if continued into science data acquisition periods, will have non-trivial repercussions for RS gravity investigators. Trish Priest has contacted Project officials and learned that ramping is planned only for Aerobraking. ISA Z44194 has been submitted, not so much to change operations during Aerobraking, as to document our concern regarding impact on analysis if ramping extends into periods of science data acquisition. The reference frame for CK files was switched from J2000 to Mars Mean Equator (also known as Mars IAU in some circles) on the second orbit after MOI. Frank Lemoine noted a discontinuity in CK file data at midnight between 13 and 14 Sept (97/256 and 97/257). I have a call in to Owen Short asking whether this is permanent (I presume so) and what they are using as the definition for MME. These residuals had tails at the end of passes that were up to 1 mm/s in amplitude. Frank had suggested they might be due to s/c attitude; however, it turns out that the real culprit was Earth troposphere. The earlier analysis used a model of mean meteorological conditions. The "mean met data model" is obviously inadequate, although adjusting troposphere scale parameters will remove most of that signal. Applying the DSN weather data collected at each site smooths the tails almost completely. There is a small residual "tail" at each pass which may be due to ionosphere. In any event the pass of data is much cleaner. The structure that remains in the residuals is due to the P2 and P3 periapse passes, and is one or all of the following: gravity, drag, s/c attitude.
