No reports since Friday (HEA8023A.TXT) because of the weekend. Two grazing and one highly oblique surface occultation have been observed since Friday. See Open Loop Data below for details. There is a new spacecraft clock file. See Ancillary Data below for details. The temperature of the USO dropped below 9 degrees C for the first time since launch. Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- Two grazing occultations and one oblique surface occultation have been observed since Friday. The following are edited reports from Trish Priest; see also the section Anomalies, also based on reports from Trish. 98/024: Data were collected for the first MGS occultation during aerobraking. This was a grazing occultation. After a few snags, we successfully collected slightly more than 15 minutes of data. The spacecraft performed perfectly. Telemetry was off and the spacecraft went one-way on time. The signal was very strong and clean in the SSI display -- approximately 40-45 dB above the noise floor. No spurs were seen. One-way time period: 024-19:15:32 to 024-19:32:16 OPTG predicted Atmosphere begin: 024-19:25:33 OPTG predicted Atmosphere end: 024-19:36:23 One-way period ended at 19:32:16 due to spacecraft turn to aerobraking attitude. Standard USO configuration: 5000 sps, 12-bits, 2kHz filter (3), reliable data delivery. 98/025: Data collection for the second grazing occultation went very smoothly. No buffer overflows; no error messages. It was very quiet. There was a strong signal in the SSI display, and we did not see any perceptable changes due to the atmosphere. The data from DOY 025 have no missing records according to the CDR record count. DSP record times: 025-15:33:00 to 025-15:54:00 1-way signal: 025-15:33:17 to 025-15:52:35 98/026: The third occultation hit the surface of Mars. We saw the signal disappear from the SSI display. The amplitude varied quite a bit. The DSP recorded throughout. No problems were encountered. This observation was over DSS 65. The usual configuration was used. We changed the attenuation three times at the beginning of the recording period (the latest was before 11:47:40). The signal disappeared from the SSI display on time. The observation ended 2 minutes after surface begin as specified by the aerobraking block parameters which were set at the reset meeting. DSP Record Times: 026-11:42:00 to 026-12:00:00 One-way Period: 026-11:42:43 to 026-11:58:44 Expected Occultation Time: 026-11:56:44 Anomalies --------- The 98/024 pass was over DSS 15. Lunar Prospector released the DSP from the DSS-24 link, and MGS took over use of the equipment. Since LPM uses a high sampling rate, the buffers were relatively full; at the beginning of data collection for MGS, the DSP reported some buffer errors. This means that there may be some missing records in the first 5 minutes of data. In the future, we will have the station reboot the DSP or flush the buffers if an MGS support immediately follows an LPM support. Capability to FTP predicts to the DSP did not work for the 98/024 track. We used the usual NSS-generated predicts instead. Jennifer was able to FTP the same predict set to the DSP at SPC 60, however, prior to the 98/025 occultation. Jennifer had a question about the binary format of those predicts, so we used DSN predicts again. On 98/026 we used DSN-generated predicts for the occultation, then used our own predicts for a period of one-way after periapsis. The signal remained centered in the display. There were no errors or problems. The RSST-generated predict values compared well with the NSS predicts. Jennifer will look at the format issue at DTF-21 on Monday. Data from all three occultations are on the CDR but have not made it to the TDS. We believe that it is a simple directory issue which can be resolved Monday. The appropriate people have been notified by e-mail.
