PDS_VERSION = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1998-04-06 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA8096A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= This is the first health report since HEA8093A.TXT because of the weekend. This was not a good weekend for open loop data (see below). We have defined a new data type (ECT = Engineering Channel Table) which will be PDS TABLE objects of single spacecraft engineering channels versus time in seconds. The only ECT defined so far is the USO temperature (channel T-0315), which will appear in the ECT directory as files named TUSydddC.ECT, where y is the 1-digit year, ddd is the 3-digit day-of-year, and C is a character (e.g., "A") denoting version or sequence number. Each data file will be accompanied by a detacted PDS label with name TUSydddC.LBL. TUS*ECT files from late January to the present will be available on our magellan server later today (not all days are available because of various query and other problems). ECT files will be saved in the Radio Science archive. There were also four POCA time tag errors in the file. The carrier was so weak during egress (starting 1998/094-09:53:00) that it could not be identified in quick-look spectra. There were six POCA time tag errors in the egress file. The first query for data beginning 1998/095-07:56:10 failed on a read error. The query for data beginning at 1998/095-08:40:00 also failed on a read error. ISA #45888 was submitted. New queries were submitted this morning, and the second query appears to have been successful in both cases. Data beginning at 1998/095-07:56:10 had no POCA time tag errors -- the first time open loop data from SPC 60 have been "clean" in over a week. Data beginning at 1998/095-08:40:00 had 4 POCA time tag errors. Data from DSS 54 on 1998/096 had two and four POCA time tag errors on ingress and egress, respectively. Station personnel reported heavy rain during data collection for the occultation beginning 1998/095-07:56:10. Carrier-to-noise was about 10 dB lower than expected. During the egress occultation, carrier-to-noise was about 6 dB below expectations. The noise baseline dropped about 2 dB during the 25 minutes of egress recording, perhaps as rain moved away; amplitudes had been relatively stable (albeit suppressed) during ingress. Signal in data from DSS 15 on 1998/095 appears to be "broken up" on an intermittent basis during both ingress and egress (Figure HEA8096A.PS1). On ingress there is about 3 minutes of good data, 10 minutes of "broken" data (including the occultation), and 3 minutes of good data. On egress there is 10 minutes of broken data (including the occultation), 11 minutes of good data, 10 minutes of broken data, 4 minutes of good data, and a final 4 minutes of broken data but with only about 1 dB of amplitude variation. We do not see such fluctuations in the carrier-to-noise estimates from power spectra, but the histogram of sample values suggests that the ingress samples have more than two distributions. Sample power vs time from ingress data collected at DSS 15 starting at 1998/095-19:35:00. Points plotted are one-second averages of power in raw sample values. Erratic behavior, such as that beginning at 19.63 hrs and continuing through occultation to 19.79 hrs, has not been seen before. The same behavior is visible in egress data about an hour later. We rule out a spacecraft source because the behavior continues into occultation. But the current diagnostics do not distinguish between a ground station and Stanford problem.
