Mgs_CDR_QueryServer was having problems Friday afternoon. At least daily queries since Friday have yielded nothing. We have submitted ISA Z49141. Data beginning 1998/338-23:59:52 and 1998/339-01:07:00 (both DSS 45) have anomalously low SNR (and may have been saturating the analog-to-digital converters). Cause is unknown. Data beginning 1998/339-18:41:00 arrived with what appear to be duplicate records interleaved, but delayed from, the main data stream. We have been unable to carry out quick-look processing on this file. Data beginning 1998/340-17:59:00 did not successfully complete quick- look processing at Stanford. In an attempt to catch up on data collection, two similar processes were initiated which apparently interfered with each other. In a couple cases, apoapsis maneuvers to adjust the aerobraking trajectory were conducted after tuning predictions were calculated. Typically the ingress occultation was not acquired; egress data were acquired but the signal was out of the passband -- e.g., 1998/340-00:33:00. Engineers at SPC 60 have apparently located and repaired the problem causing low SNR on occultations captured at DSS 54 and DSS 65. The report from Jesus Calvo: After having found that the anomaly was frequency related (No problem at 8415 MHz or even 8418MHz (MGS 2 way) but 8 dB degradation at MGS 1way (8423.7 MHz)) and forgetting for a while that the malfunction was station dependant, it didn't take long to find out that the offending component was the variable Local Oscillator (First Stage) of the Radio Science Down Converter. The LO has been found to be very weak (about -9 dBm instead of +10 dBm). After replacing the circuit board that generates it, the system performance appears to be nominal at any frequency.
