This loss had been attributed to the Ground Data System (GDS) in yesterday's report (HEA8357A.TXT). The signal was 15 dB higher, and the FFT (SSI) display updated three times (10 seconds each) before the signal was completely gone. Usually it is now-you-see-it, now-you- don't. The signal looked great, and it stayed nicely centered. For all ingress measurements in the next week, telemetry will be off and the spacecraft will be one-way for 12 minutes before the predicted ingress until 5 minutes after. Anomalies --------- Spectra from data collected beginning at 1998/357-17:11:00 show no carrier signal. The carrier had been drifting at about -650 Hz/hr in the previous occultation; it's possible the signal had dropped off the low end of the filter. There was also a trajectory adjustment maneuver between the two observations. Transponder and TWT were turned off immediately after ingress starting with the occultation at 1998/358-01:03:00; hence, there was no transmission and no signal in those data. This change is in preparation for the periapsis "drag pass" on each orbit and, later, for the extended solar eclipse periods. For the remainder of this occultation "season", only ingress occultations will be collected.
