PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1999-02-12 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA9043A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Errata ====== One paragraph under Open Loop Data: Anomalies in yesterday's report (HEA9042A.TXT) was garbled. It should have read: Data from seven occultations were corrupted because the pre-ingress amplitude baseline is scalloped at +/-0.2 dB. Data from three egress occultations had unusually noisy amplitude baselines. Miscellaneous ============= A new spacecraft clock conversion file has been received; see Ancillary Data, below (data type SCK). The naming convention for SCK files has been changed to improve our ability to handle these files. File names henceforth will be of the form TSCnnnnn.SCK where nnnnn is the sequence number assigned by the Spacecraft Team (currently 00023). Bill Sjogren, from examination of tracking data over Mars' South Pole believes that significant new structure is being detected. The new detail may partly explain the "poor" orbit reconstructions noted by Joe Twicken below in connection with analyzing occultation data. After looking at data from 1999/039-00:16:00 and 02:14:00, he noted: The first ODR was not processed to completion because the POCA file could not be auto-salvaged. I fixed it by hand and completed the processing. Both ODR's have bad orbit reconstructions. Trish Priest has determined that seven occultations mentioned in yesterday's report (HEA9042A.TXT) as "lost in the ground data system" were never actually captured. Apparently the DSP was rebooted at SPC 60 (for unknown reasons). After the reboot, the DSP was never put back into the link. As a result, no data were collected. One of the remaining two "lost" occultations may still be recoverable; she is working on that. The second was lost to a SPA-R initialization error. A second SPA-R initialization error caused loss of occultation data beginning approximately 1999/043-03:06:00 in the list above. The four occultations between 1999/041-20:00:00 and 1999/042- 00:00:00 occurred when DSS 42 was being used to track the spacecraft. Although it is possible to acquire occultation data from this antenna, the equipment must be configured manually. Given resource limitations, no attempt was made to do so. All ingress occultations were recorded with telemetry ON; most ingress occultations are two-way with uplink ramping. Typical SNR on these occultations is 15 dB below the corresponding egress value. All but one ingress recorded at SPC 60 has scalloping on the carrier amplitude at approximately 0.5 dB (peak-to-peak) about the mean value. There is no scalloping during egress, and we are no longer seeing hints of scalloping in data from other complexes. The one ingress for which scalloping is not apparent was the first SPC 60 observation (1999/042-00:35:00) in the list above; during that occultation the pre-ingress amplitude baseline was simply noisy (at about 0.4 dB p-p). Two egress occultations at DSS 14 (1999/042-11:17:00 and 1999/042-13:16:00) have unexpected carrier frequency drift (approx +/-50 Hz), as though ramping were being used during egress. There is no sign of a spacecraft signal in the data collected from DSS 45 starting at 1999/043-00:18:00.
