It is not clear how this happened or what we can do to prevent such events in the future; but original performance has been largely restored. We have unambiguously detected surface echoes in occultation data. For details, see caption below and figure being distributed separately (HEA9057A.PS1). All ingress occultations at DSS 65 have amplitude variations +/-0.3 dB resulting from ramping and receiver filter ripple. Generally, all ingress occultations have about 16 dB lower SNR because telemetry is ON. 5 occultations were lost to NADIR test activities. Start times ran from 1999/056-00:30:00 to 04:45:00, inclusive. 1 occultation (start time 1999/056-10:18:00) was lost to a known, but infrequent, remote operations bug (on the list for repair). 2 egress occultations appear to have uplink ramping (start times 1999/056-14:13:00 and 16:10:00). Closed Loop Data ================ Data Collection --------------- We have obtained the following files from OSCAR and EPIC: Original File Name Name on SOPC -------------------------------- ------------ ODF: 99056E057_D23.DAT;1 9056056A.ODF 99056O057_10S.SJO;1 9056057A.ODF Ancillary Data ============== Data Collection --------------- We have obtained the following files from the FIS: Original File Name Name on SOPC -------------------------------- ------------ OPT: optg_i_990224_OD1533-1543_1682_V1 9055068A.OPT SAK: mgs_solar_array_1999-056.ck 9056056A.SAK SPK: spk_i_990224_OD1533-1543_1682_V1 9055068A.SPK TCK: mgs_spice_c_kernel_1999-056.ck 9056056A.TCK SOE: p1554b.00.tsoe 9057063A.SOE SOE: p1554c.01.tsoe 9057063B.SOE Figure Caption ============== HEA9057A.PS1: Signal drifting to left as time increases (bottom to top) is echo reflected specularly from surface in vicinity of the occultation point - approximately (80S, 153E). Illumination is from side of the HGA main beam. Spreading in spectra is due primarily to Doppler drift (-35 Hz/s) of the reflecting region and not to dispersion by surface roughness. Incidence and reflection angles range from about 89.8 deg (lower; probably limited by shadowing) to about 89.6 deg (upper; as HGA illumination leaves planet). SNR is as high as 500, suggesting that these events may be common in the data set, especially as we approach opposition. Absence of spectral components near carrier (center) is reassuring for those intent on extracting atmospheric parameters. Data from DSS 65 recording beginning 1999/054-03:22:00 (orbit 1513, egress occultation). Plot is linear power (arbitrary vertical scale) vs frequency. Each trace is the incoherent sum of 10 512-point power spectra. Direct carrier signal from spacecraft has been clipped to facilitate display. Figures ======= Plot(s) illustrate some of the points made in the text. Each plot is a PostScript file, created and printable on our SOPC. For report text file HEAydddC.TXT Figure N will be labeled HEAydddC.PSN and sent as the N+1st e-mail message of a set. We assume that you can strip off the e-mail headers and either display or print copies of the figures on a machine in your area.
