Data from DIFFERENT antennas should NEVER be bested; those are separate radio science measurements and needed to be treated as independent data streams. If you could get a file and ftp to mgrs, that would probably be best. But, if it's not going to arrive until after 3 PM today, I wouldn't bother. Joe and I have lots of other bodies to clean up today. Don't give it to Pat; he doesn't know how to process these data (I don't think). Each of the four files should be just a shade under 2.5 MB (2 time periods, 2 stations). I've been looking at data from the first radio occultation of MGS by Mars. Here's a report on measurements of the ionosphere during egress, which may be of interest for aerobraking. The location of the ionospheric measurements is 20 deg S latitude, 33 deg W longitude. The solar zenith angle was 54 deg. The peak electron number density was 140,000 per cubic centimeter at a planetocentric radius of 3530 km. The topside has a well-defined scale height of 40 km between radii 3530 and 3590 km. This implies a plasma temperature of 260 K for electrons and ions in diffusive equilibrium, assuming O2+ to be the principal ion. These results are consistent with previous measurements, but the altitude range (135-195 km) is an interesting one for us, so I thought I would relay this information to you. In reviewing previous results, I noticed that Lindal et al. (JGR, 84, 8443-8456, 1979) assumed the principal ion to be CO2+. The plasma temperatures he derived from measured topside scale heights are therefore too large by a factor of about 44/32. Please call if you have questions. According to the DSN logs, the only significant difference in the station configurations was that DSS 43 was just rising (low elevation) and DSS 14 was at peak elevation. The opposite of what one might expect if elevation angle influenced the Allan deviation numbers. Looking back at the other USO data since safing, the DOY 224 data (one of the two worst Allan deviation results) was taken at the end of the station's view period (low elevation). USO Test #13 was about a third of the way into the view period. Mars is so far south that DSS 14 peak elevation never gets above 40 deg while DSS 43 peaks in the 70's. Around the time of MOI DSS 14 was in the high 20's while DSS 43 was in the mid 30's, probably not enough of a difference to explain the Allan deviation results -- but in the right direction.
