At DSS 45, the LGA's one-way, carrier-only signal was acquired after the occultation ended at 087-02:36:00. The station reported that the signal was initially acquired with an AGC of -167 dBm. The receivers were still in lock around 02:59 with an AGC of -170 dBm. I have just realized that there are planned activites and handovers etc during playback that cause us to lose science data return. On our first pass (P203) we lost half the MOLA data over the icecap on playback because there was a transfer between the LGA and HGA (I think) during playback. Anyway, the data are lost and are not going to be retrieved from the s/c recorders (no time?). This afternoon (P206) we are unlikely to get ANY data relayed back because there is not a DSN station up at playback time - so we lose all the data for the whole pass. Unfortunately, I am being told this is a regular occurrence and we can expect to lose MOLA data (and other science data) about every other pass. Is this for real? Any insight would be useful so I know how to react. It's true they are delivering new SPK files only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. For each file they will be making ONE orbit reconstruction and then projecting. The orbit they choose depends mostly on timing and, I gather, could sometimes include a bit more than that one orbit. The plan is to make the delivery at 8 AM PT and the data that go into the solution are from the orbit with the most recent periapsis. If periapsis was well before 8 AM, they may include whatever post-periapsis data are available when they do the solution. During the week, this means that we will see approximately one orbit out of every four reconstructed. On weekends, the situation is more like one in six. Pat says he may not be able to reconstruct every orbit during Aerobraking Phase 2; that will depend on resources. He is limited by time and people. From what he says, I gather his staff was close to revolting from the recent heavy work load. They will relax to an 8-5 schedule over the summer and try to regroup. On his long-term calendar, he will be spending time over the summer planning NAV activities for Mars-98, which he is also supporting. He will also be trying to figure out the best way to deal with MGS ABX-2. On the positive side, he said he would let us know if there are variations to this plan. In fact, one of his people did do some work over the weekend; but they decided not to post these solutions on the CDB for fear of confusing people who had already been told there would be only Mon-Wed- Fri deliveries with single orbit reconstructions. I told him about the progressively poor "steering" we saw in the data collected over the weekend; so he's aware of our situation. Though Pat didn't mention it, I believe Trish told us the periapsis raising is being done in steps. It's possible the orbits will be more stable once we reach the "final" altitude. It's also possible that some orbits will be more stable because there are fewer gravity perturbations. Per my earlier note, there's also the possibility that Smith's group may come through with orbit solutions (later) for some of the missing orbits. As of the moment, I think we're stuck. I used the 8089121A.SPK file to steer it. I believed that SPK file should contain a reconstructed trajectory for the occultation in question. The ODR suffers from the sawtooth problem. I have seen this in 4 of the last 13 ODR's that I processed. Just to remind you all: Occ #92 80831600 Occ #97 8086022D Occ #100 80871320 Occ #104 80891159 One other problem: there is an offset in the steered data for occultation #104 of about 6 Hz from the center of the band. This does not make sense to me, unless the SPK file is not actually a reconstruction of the trajectory for that orbit. The SPK start time is 98/089-01:25:00 which is actually during the egress recording for the previous occultation. Joe
